Saw this thread a couple of days ago and thought I might add a picture with some of my inserts. Most of mine go on cane rods, but I have no problem with using them for glass.

Varnished cork can be very pretty too. Varnishing cork (and acorn butt caps) was style preference of the late Paul Brown. These are old stock Fenwick World Class blanks that I recently finished up, a 902 and a 903. Each has a 6 inch grip and a 3.25 inch seat. You may read more about his rods here

902 (with acorn butt cap)

903

903 (finished this one a few years ago, but thought I might share it too. Another varnished seat but I stained the cork red)

Since I can't do it individually, lets see if I can do it this way.

The William A Harms McFarland specials reel seats made of mortised and polished olive wood are mighty fine. I love the inlaid butt section. My 4 weight pictured here with blackened sliding bands and the older model San Miguel.

With apologies to my good friend, Matt Leiderman for using a photo of his rod that I took at the latest McFarland gathering, I have to say his latest Winston bamboo rod has a reel seat that is one of my all time favorites. Nobody did zebra wood inserts like Winston back in the day. That Kineya is some additional eye candy of course. (It’s nice to see that a thread that I started back in 2007 when all was right with the world, at least for me, continues.)

Since this thread is about reel seats, I hope it's okay for this to be here. This snake skin reel seat is the only one I've seen like this. The reel seat and Winston IM6 rod were custom made by Marty DeSapio. I can't take a photo that does the seat justice...it is absolutely beautiful to see in person. https://dryflynm.blogspot.com/2021/02/t ... pdate.html

Bi metal seat I got from Shane a few years back. Insert is cocobolo. Blank is a Pac Bay Tradition IM6 904. Bill (WJude) got me into these blanks. They fish nicely!

Here's one from years ago that I built for a Kabuto 805 blank. The wood is osage orange and I fabricated the hardware from brass. The butt cap is meant to be a stylized chrysanthemum flower, a symbol of the Japanese Royalty. The reel is a Kineya 301B.

Older thread but I've been enjoying the work pictured here. @Corlay, love the beech sapling idea, nice work!

Here are a couple beauties I've recently picked up from Ray Lee. I chose the top one because it reminds me of the ridge lines from my home state of VT. Ray is such a great guy to deal with and his work is top notch. Come to find out, his wife is a Vermonter as well.

Thought I would share some pictures of some reel seats for some personal rods.

This is a rod for my wife. Probably the nicest piece of curly koa I have ever seen.

This is a piece of tiger wood.

My bother did this spalted maple double slide band seat for himself. It had a layered button of cork, walnut, and spalted maple.

Another of curly spalted maple with a layered cork and acorn button.

Finally a rod for myself. This is sapwood koa. It’s a little on the plainer side, but it has a reddish top and lighter somewhat spalted bottom. It’s funny how a particular piece of wood can catch your fancy. I showed this piece to several customers but no takers. So I decided to grab it. It will be paired with a raspberry lemonade (red and yellow) Struble agate guide.
