My friend OKMike has a Wanigas rod that looks just like that Au Sable (and I think it may be an Au Sable). When he showed it to me I was pretty certain that it was built on a Fisher blank. I have an old Hardy JET and a old Hardy Perfection and the blanks look pretty much identical. The only difference I saw was the brown spigots on the Wanigas compared to the white spigots on the Hardys. Most of the Fishers I have seen have the brown spigots. In casting it, it certainly felt like a Fisher. I was glad to see Mark validate my opinion.

I have the 8' 6wt Au Sable and it sure feels like a Fisher.... and I fish it. It's a sweet stick.

I know this is an old thread, but man those are some really great rods... I wonder if people back then really appreciated what they had or if they took it for granted (a lot like I suppose we do)?

I met Art and rec'd my first rod from him 35 yrs. ago. I had just started flyfishing, but I knew from the get go that I had been given something special. I have 4 of Art's rods now , 2 glass & 2 graphite. You couldn't ask for better gear or a better person.

Very nice rod Grouse, and I totally agree with your opening day sentiment. I know a gentleman and his son who each own a ausable, and they will never part with it. I’m always looking, maybe someday.

Mike,

This time of year is tough on most anglers. Opening day will be a welcome sight.

Best of luck on your search for a Wanigas Au Sable. They are a pleasure to cast.

Would be interested in hearing which models your friends have in this series. The one shown above is a 7’ 6” six weight.

The next time I see Al at the hardware in Durand I’m going to have that discussion with him, maybe see if he might be interested in letting that rod go. I know he was using for bluegill fishing around here. I would love to use it on the S.B.
Mike.
