Stumbled across this 7 foot rod with a really short cork grip... 9 total rings.

Have you any rods that are 9 rings or less ?

Wish I could tell you more about this little peach. Maybe you can.
Pretty sure this custom rod is older than me.
Sizematic ferrules and a slotted screw on reel seat bottom.

A real joy to cast all day. Nimble little wand.

I’m not sure I could deal with a 4.5 inch grip. I just rebuilt a bamboo rod with a 5 inch grip for a friend and found there wasn’t any spare space for my hand.

Regardless of the grip length, it looks like it could be a good rod. I’ve never seen. A reel seat like that.

Nice. That Compaq hardy knock-off could be worth its own thread. The grip, sure. On a custom rod or hobby build, the user's hand and comfort is all that matters. Factory grips and typical lengths are designed to accommodate many hands and several gripping positions. An individual may want a similar range of varied grip positions for different fishing styles and reels. But the shorter grip makes perfect sense if the user is confident it fits. On a short rod, especially with the grip eased right down to the reel seat, it's natural for the hand to grip down snug to the reel, in effect adding about an inch to the available grip length.

I have Orvis Deluxe Bamboo rods from the 50's that have grips that short. These rods are 6' 6.5' and 7' and feel just right to me with that configuration.

If you have a down locking reel seat like that, you gain an inch or two. Especially with a cap and ring seat. However I don't mind a longer fenwick or ritz grip. I still often cast with my hand back touching the reel, but like the ability to move up and down.

I think there were some Paul Young rods with really short grips.

It would be my pleasure to let any one cast this little gem any day of the week.

When trying it on - its actually fun to see the reaction... and how well it fits some casters.

Didn’t realize I had so many smaller grips.
From top to bottom…
C Barclay 68 3wt
Soul Mate 7ft 2wt
Bill Critchfield cane 6’6” 3wt
Ben’s of Holland 6’6” 2wt
Lastly, Lamiglas 6ft 3wt
I think the Lami is on the cusp of 8 rings for the grip.
I really like these shorter grips on light weight/shorter rods.

My standard grips are as follows:
5 1/2' - 6' rod - 4" grip
6'-3" - 6-9" rod - 4 1/2" grip
7' - 7 '-6" rod - 5" grip
7'-9" - 8' rod - 5 1/2" grip
8' - 8'+ rod - 6" grip
Nothing looks worst than a long grip on a short rod.

I was going to offer up the Shakespeare 1245 Panfish Special, but it actually has ten cork rings. In any case, the reel seat on Brian’s rod is similar to what is found on many Wonderods.

This 6 ft Phillipson Master has 9 cork rings, the 9th has a taper to the reel seat.
