I've worked with osage orange in the past and it's a really hard, dense wood. It'll be interesting to see if the color of your reel seat spacer darkens with age or whether it will be preserved by the varnish overcoat because this wood typically does darken. Nice job!

That’s a thing of beauty! I knew a bow maker who used Osage orange quite a bit. I always loved the coloring

Nice build - I like your style! I’m thinking about building on the same McFarland blank. Have you had a chance to cast the rod yet in the yard? I’d love to hear your thoughts on the taper in the 683 configuration.

Beautiful rod Marc,
As a fellow reel seat turner, my eyes are naturally drawn to your reel seat. That Osage Orange is a perfect match for the blank's color/texture. Great wood selection and execution!

Great job Marc!
Maybe replace the Abel reel (heavy for such a short & light rod) for a Hardy Featherweight or Orvis CFO 123 :)

Thank you guys for your kind feedback!

@tiptop… the insert already darkened, as i had it layin around for at least half a year after i turned and varnished it… so i guess it stays as it is now…

@jay… the abel reel was just at hand.. i guess i will pair it with my ids shukken reel… same size, half the weight.

thanks again… Some very enjoyable christmas holidays for you all!
