This was supposed to be a winter build but you know, something about best-laid plans… It’s now a summer build and still in progress. Pretty happy with the ferrule wraps, Fuji Ultra dark brown with Prowrap Calcutta metallic accents. This is my first build and I’m having a ball! Can definitely see how this could become an addiction!

Outstanding! Your thread work is beautiful and the colors play very nicely with the blank.

Thanks everyone! I’m a bit nervous about the next step, getting the epoxy on the wraps. I’ve read through a bunch of great tips and insights here on the forum, and I’ve got Matt’s tutorial videos on repeat, should be a walk in the park : )

Great build on Matt’s quality components. Look forward to seeing the finished rod.

Finally finished this one up and am pretty happy with the epoxy work, which was surprisingly less stress than anticipated. I used Threadmaster Lite and found it to be very forgiving. My work isn’t perfect, but not bad for a first attempt. I cast the rod in the yard and was surprised at the capabilities of this little stick. I think it’ll be a blast to fish.

Great work, I'd say, first attempt or any. You nailed it.

Thanks man, this was super fun! I didn’t need another way to spend time or money, but I can definitely see more rod builds in my future.

Looks great, especially for 1st build. I’ve put together a few graphite rods and it is definitely fun to catch them on your own build.

Great work all around! You and I were on a similar schedule for our first rod builds. I posted my finished Trout Smiths rod in the rod building forum a few days ago.

Like you, I was intimidated by the epoxy finish work, but it was easier than I expected when I actually got started. I used regular Threadmaster instead of the lite version, and I found that the key was to use as little epoxy as possible - just enough to cover the wraps.

I am curious as to the blank action and whether the blank is true to line weight designation. My sole experience with a Proof blank is that I believed it to be a line weight heavier. Nice job on the build by the way. I really like the thread choice.

I've only cast the rod in the yard and it handles a standard 3wt wf (SA Mastery Trout) line beautifully. I think it would throw a 2wt just as well if you were looking for a slightly faster action but I'm liking it as a 3wt. It's been a lot of fun in the yard, looking forward to getting it on the water.

May I ask where you sourced that stripping guide? The rod looks great!

Yes that’s the one, thanks Matt. This was purchased as a kit from Matt @ Proof, so he put together the guide set. He’s great to deal with. Any questions, just give him a shout.

Was just browsing through the rod photos section & saw this, & wanted to comment that I really like the color scheme.
