Anxious to fish this rod I squeezed the build in between several planned fishing trips. The rod is a little brother to my 8’3” five weight “Classic”, and lawn casting with a 406 DT4 tells me it’s going to be an enjoyable rod on stream.

Love the Jasper thread and that reel seat is gorgeous! What kind of wood is that? How does the rod feel compared to other popular 4 wts, say the Steffen 8' 3/4wt and the Lami 7.5' 4wt?

Thanks all for the positive comments.

Driftless, I’d have to dig out purchase docs on the wood blanks I bought (turned and finished this one last summer) but they’re some type of dyed burl. Possibly stabilized. I have lawn cast a friend’s 8’ Steffen 3/4 with my 406 DT4 line. The Steffen is a well respected rod, with a different taper, and is somewhat faster than my McFarland 804-3. The grip/reel seat was also set up different than I would have. If I’m not mistaken the Steffen is an S-glass blank. My friend’s rod felt lighter out front, loaded differently.

Hope this helps,
Jeff

Wow those black/gold jasper wraps are awesome .
I especially like the wrap work by winding check.
Did you put a hookeeper on the rod?
The reel seat is super unique and really sets that rod off..

Thanks for looking ottobahn,
Just checked my records and that stabilized reel seat wood was from Reelseatblanks.com and is gold/black dyed Box Elder burl. Unfortunately, I would learn that I was their last customer as they were closing their broader lumber operations that very week. This rod doesn’t have a hook keeper, I don’t find them to be necessary.

Aesthetics aside, this E-glass rod is a pleasure to cast.
