Finished this Iconoglass 4 wt a couple weeks ago. Second of 4. Currently building a 10' graphite for a former colleague and its fighting me all the way but that's another story. This 4 wt will stay with me as I recently gave away a few rods including my only 4 wt which is a graphite early build of mine.
Ray Lee dyed maple reel seat. Guides and cork from Proof. Gudebrod Dark Green wraps with Spring Green trim. I was going for a near black look that would pop green in the light and I got pretty close. Photos may or may not show. A departure for me was no epoxy finish. I taught myself with epoxy and stuck with it till recently. Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane was used and I really enjoyed working with it. Got the look I wanted after 8 or 9 thin coats. Thanks for looking.

Looks really good. Ray Lee makes some nice reel seats.

It's gorgeous. Fished or lawn cast yet? How do you like it? I have another dumb question, why did you change from epoxy to varnish? Thank you.

I haven't fished or lawn cast it yet. Shame on me. I even live on a lake. Haven't even had a reel on it but I cast the 5 wt version I built a couple months ago. They (NFC) are different. Maybe a little on the heavy side but nice and supple. I suspect the 5 and the 4 are the same taper as the tips are both size 4 but the butt diameter goes from a half inch to around 7/16" on the 4 wt which kinda makes sense being 6" shorter. Much different rod than the J Green 5 wt I built a couple years ago. As far as the varnish, I've had an unopened can for a while but was afraid of the unknown. I don't like using color preserver so I thought I'd try the Spar as a first coat to see its darkening properties a few rods ago. It seemed to not darken the thread as much At least that's what I told myself. Then I finished with Epoxy. This rod is all Spar Urethane. No mixing, fast drying, easy to tweak between coats. Thanks for asking.

The varnish sounds like a good idea. Thank you for your reply.

Cool build. I love fishing with that stick. I have a NFC 4wt clear blank that Shane Gray built. It’s one of my favorites.

My friend OKMike built up an NFC 8 weight last year and I had the opportunity to cast it. It was, as several people have described, somewhat heavy and had a rather fast action. With that rod, I could launch line further than I ever had with any other rod. He recently built up an NFC 7'6" 4 weight. While he and I were camping and fishing recently, I had the chance to cast this rod also. I was expecting a somewhat heavy, stiff rod, but was pleasantly surprised to find it to have a smooth progressive medium action that made it a pleasure to cast.
