I couldn’t resist buying this unique little rod from Mike this weekend. When I first saw it I thought it might be one of those cigar containers that you sometimes see but when I opened the tube I found a gorgeous little five-piece 5’6” #3 Spruce Creek. Just had to have it! It’s a sweet caster, which in my experience is unusual with very short rods. Of course, Mike McFarland would not make a poor casting rod no matter what length. Built in 2011 on an in-house rolled Spruce Creek blank, it’s a “one of one”.

Cool rod!

I bet the 4 ferrules help give the rod mass so it loads easier at close distances...

I think you’re right, Corey. It’s truly amazing. I just came in from casting it with a half of a DT4 on a Hardy Flyweight and for in close casting it’s perfect. I’ve had the Flyweight for close to 40 years and never had a rod that truly fit it until now. Missed you this weekend - we escaped the rain until this morning.

Duff, just out of curiosity, what is the size of the Hardy Flyweight? That little rod would fit nicely into a daypack for some who'dathunk it flyfishing.

PampasPete, a Flyweight is 2 1/2” in diameter. The tube is is just 16” so yes, it will easily fit in most daypacks.

Duff - That's such a cool little rod. Have you tried it with a 3wt line yet?

Pampas - And Flyweights weigh about 2-3/4oz

Not the same blank or rod, but I have a couple of "one of ones" that Mike built for me.

First a 5'6" 3wt Spruce Creek that Mike built for me years ago on the smooth blanks he was using at the time. It has an extra heavier tip he made to help it load to my liking, however I like it best with the regular tip.

I also have a 6'0" 2pc 3wt Spruce Creek on the same smooth blanks that he built me for me with a nickel silver ferrule that casts like dream.

Mike knows how to design and build 'em, even short rods.

That's a sweet rod you got there Duff!!

Sometimes you look at a fly rod and just grin from ear to ear....this is one. Let us know how it fishes.

That is very nice. I have a sweet spot for pack rods.
Not only are they fun to fish, but you can also measure the fish by # of rod sections :lol
