I recently finished out a couple double hand fiberglass rods. A CTS 11'6" 6wt, and a McFarland 12'3" 7wt. It's hard to get great photos of these rods because of the long grips but here's what I have.

CTS

McFarland

The chestnut(?) on the Macfarland is stunning. I ordered nylon - raspberry, cranberry and maroon to test on a gray and also a white blank. But I think you just flat nailed it.

Yeah, my wife picks my clothes when we go out on a date...

Nice work as always. I like the 11' 6" size as that is what I mostly fish in the salt these days. Do you know if that blank comes in a 7wt? Oh and is that blank silver?

jeffsod, I am pretty sure it comes in a 7wt. And yes the blank is silver (customer supplied blank). These rods are interesting and both do cast and feel very nice, especially for long glass rods. I think the two makers have a different approach in making the blanks, the CTS is a smaller diameter blank, whereas the McFarland is a much larger diameter. I think I prefer to build the CTS, but favor the McFarland feel a bit more.

I can definitely answer that one actually- I’m about to post a picture of my build on the same blank and I talked in detail with CTS before I ordered it.

CTS has their standard 2h glass blanks listed as 11’6” #6 and 12’ #7, but the grain weights they’re designed for are about 400-500 for the 11’6” and 450-550 for the 12’. Which for me and most people I know make them a more of a 7wt and 8wt respectively.

Shane is totally right about the makers’ design philosophies- both are great rod but the two styles feel very different.
