Good stuff kbobb. I hope you like fishing it. Let us know what you think of it.
Would like to see a few more pictures.
I’m building the same blank too and will post some pics when I figure out how.
Michael

Good job on the build. How do you like the 2/3. I bought the 6’ 2/3 blank a year or more ago and just love it. Roy

I have not had it on the creek yet this year - made it for small streams and brookies. I've been tight line nymphing (Euro rod) and fishing my Steffen 8' 3/4 for BWO and caddis the few days i have been out this spring.
I cast it (the 7'3") in the yard a ton and it is super accurate. I made up a 7 1/2' 5x leader from George Harvey's formula and used a DT3F and this thing will softly drop a fly on a maple leaf anywhere from 10' to 35' consistently with great feel in the rod. I used Mark's guide sizes and spacing - the only thing I changed was I used the next smaller guide size right before the tip top than what Mark uses.
I will post some better pictures of this rod and my Steffen 8' 5/6 tomorrow.

How do you like the 6' 2/3 and what do you use it for? what size flies will it handle? Do you use a 2wt or 3wt line on it?

Beautiful. And I think you re going to fall in love with that blank. I cannot imagine how light it is. I have the 3/4 in the same length and it is as light as a wren’s feather...

This guy and the bigger 8' 5/6 - hope these are beter.

TytLynz - i put a little bigger reel seat on it than a cork/slide ring cause I like the wood and it adds some weight at the butt end making the tip feel even lighter - i can't wait to put a trout on the end of this one!!

Thanks for the pics. Great to see them side by side. So how much longer is that full Wells grip on the 5/6?

full wells is 7 1/2" other grip is 6 7/8". I like a pretty big grip - I have a little 6 1/2' graphite someone made me that has a grip so small my hand covers it from end to end -nice rod otherwise.

I like longer grips as well. I have big hands so, if the grip isn’t long, part of my hand is forced onto the reel seat, negatively impacting my feel of the blank, as well as comfort.
And please remember to provide a report from the water sometime...

I use the 6’ 2/3 for very small creeks. I originally built the blank to fish the Ponil in northern New Mexico at Aurelio’s place. A magical stream sometimes no wider than a foot or two and great fishing. The streams I fish in the Cascades are small streams where 10” or 11” is big and you don’t see anyone. Mostly rainbows and cutts. I use a Wulff Triangle Taper 3wt line. I fish only dries on this rod mostly 16, sometimes 14.
Here are some pics of the rod...

Beautiful rod Retired! Does it roll cast nicely with the TT3? our creeks don't get quite as small as 1-2' so I'm hoping the 7'3" is appropriate - dying to get on the water with this rod but with work and Covid it is difficult so far. I really would like to catch a cutthroat - retirement is on the horizon and the plan is to take a tour of the western states next summer with a whole lotta fishin'!

I hear ya - sometimes I grip the rod so far back my pinky loosens the nut on a downlocker and the reel gets a little loose.

Thanks. To be honest, I’ve never even tried to roll cast with this rod, never had the need. If you are indeed traveling to the west coast next summer, keep in touch. I know Idaho, Oregon, Washington, also Yellowstone and parts of Montana. Be happy to spend some time showing you around. Lots of resources on this board.

i have a Chris Barclay built Steffen 7'3" 2/3 also ,really light in hand,i fish it with Airflo wf3 and a 406 DT3 i fish it mostly on a feeder of the Yellowstone ,Mill Creek ,all cutthroats,i might take it to the Lower Madison on Wed. with BWO and see how it does, has been windy lately so in that case it stays in the tube.

kbobb the 6’ 2/3 will roll cast great I had it out today on a creek I can jump across.I use a SA Mastery trout DT. 3.The creek was gin clear and I was sight casting to Rio grande cuts with size 22 and 16 dries 3’ threaded furled leader plus 5’ 6X and had a blast some 20’ cast but most of the time I had only a foot of fly line off the end of the rod.Great rod for small brushy creeks.Mine is a 3pc. and retired has a 2.........Aurelio

I have this rod built as a DL by Steffen. It is an excellent rod for VA / PA blue lines. Very accurate and fishes well with 6 to 35' of line out.

aurelio - good to hear about the casting and experience on small creeks. I have a few steffens now - 2 8'ers and this 7'3" - maybe the 6' is next. I can say this 7'3" also casts well with just a foot or so of line off the tip (yard casting so far). Jealous that you got out for good fishing.

Flyfish PA - It was a trip to Shenandoah natl park last year that inspired me to build up this rod - can't wait to get into some brookie streams at home here and give it a workout. BTW - what is a "DL"?

Kbobb -
I think DL may refer to down-locking reel seat.
Hey, also, have you fished that thing yet? Would love to hear a report when you do...

What line are you using on your Steffen 8' 3/4? I have been using a DT4F Sci Angler Mastery DT on mine which is my go to line and to me it feels like it wants a 5wt?

I always seem to have this problem with "slash" rods, I own two (and I'll never buy another) and they never feel right to me.

Bamboozle - regarding the 8' 3/4: I fish it with a DT4F - honestly I forget if it is a SA XPS presentation model or a Rio LT trout taper. I also use a 444 DT 4 sometimes.
the rod feels more "solid or purposeful" (for lack of a better descriptor) with a DT4 The DT3 works but feels like I have a bit less control. Others here probably have more experience with this rod than me and may be able to give you better info. should add the 8' 3/4 is a 2 pc.

Also I fished the 7'3" and posted my thoughts in the fishing section - will add more to that now.

Well, if I have to dial it in with a 5wt, I'm selling it.

I learned my lesson with slash rods, I'll NEVER buy another. If the builder can't figure the line weight, I doubt I can either.
