I decided after building the 7'6" 4wt, 7' 3wt, and 6'6" 3wt Lamis, I might as well complete the series.

It seems like the 5 wt gets the least amount of love on the forum, but the major complaint of it being a "noodle" were from the multipiece versions. It is now only available in a 2 piece, tip over butt version. I have never cast one of the older versions, so I can't say if it has changed.

It is the fastest in the series and is more tip action, like the 4 wt, than the mid flex 3 wts. For comparison, it is a bit faster than a FF79 and throws a tighter loop. It also has more power in the butt and will still bend into the cork. It is a really nice 5 wt and handled a variety of WF and DT lines.

I spend the weekend throwing #20 smokejumpers to pods of rising browns and with the breezy conditions, was glad to have it over the 4 wt. It could punch into wind and still protect the 6x tippet.

When done on Sunday, I stopped stream side and took some pics.

The details: reel seat by Ray Lee, Snake brand light wire snakes, Minima stripper, full wells grip from Proof, Pearsalls Naples Chestnut silk wraps with medium brown tipping. The finish is Ace spar. It was my second time using silk and first using Pearsalls - I loved it. It was also my first time using spar and I will be using that over epoxy from now on. I like being able to take my time and the warmer look of spar.

Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks Allegheny! For the main wraps on these Lami's, I have also done medium brown, orange/black jasper, and green. This Pearsall's chestnut is my new favorite!

I like your build allot you did a really nice job. The Full Wells grip is my favorite the most comfortable of all the grip shapes. The 8’ 5 wt. Lami is a very nice casting rod. Enjoy!!!!

Hey, hey! I got a "Lamiglas Loops" - thanks Andy! And thanks to all you guys for answering all my rod building questions the past couple years and for showing some very inspiring builds. Rod building has turned into a very fun hobby!

Toddemurph, you can get these blanks from rod building stores for ~ $200. Better yet, you can get them from the Lamiglas website for $149. Sign up for their newsletter and you will get an email for 10% off. But watch the newsletter, they routinely have 20, 25, and even 30% off blank sales (especially around the holidays), so you can get them for a little more than $100, shipped free. Pretty good for a US made quality blank!

I forgot to mention Lanny, that the full wells is my favorite grip too. I put one on all the Lami builds. For the 6'6" 3wt, I thought that conventional wisdom, would to put a small cigar grip on, but for me that is my least favorite grip (I need a depression for my thumb and a bump for my hand). I just used the same grip sanded down a bit more and I think it looks good.

Anyway, that is the reason to build your own or have someone make you a custom rod - you get exactly what you want! Same goes for tying your own flies.

What a great looking build. At one point, I had over a dozen Lami rods I built. Until a couple of years ago, I could stop by the factory on the way to Oregon and buy “obsolete” blanks at minimal cost. Now, they destroy those blanks. What a shame.

Thanks! And that is a shame that they destroy those blanks now.

Thanks for the review of those blanks. I really like my rods made from 6'6" and 7'6" blanks.

Hey WestTex, my 6'6" is a recent build, but I have gotten out a couple times with it and can't keep from smiling while casting it. It is sloooooooow, but a lot of fun. For me it will be a nice dry fly rod for blue lines. The 7', 7'6", and 8' are not nearly as slow, true to line weight, and all around rods for what you would expect a 3, 4 or 5 wt to do. The 7'6" is still my favorite, but I have been liking the faster 8 footer for the breezy conditions this spring.

These Medium/slow E glass rods match perfectly what I want from a fiberglass rod.

Driftless, as one one of my first bosses used to say, "You done good." One of the main reasons was deciding to use a grip that felt right to your hand. Things that one knows to work well always look good, and often because there is no need to look at them. And the rod does look good.

Thanks Pa-ber and GR! It is hard to go wrong with any shade of brown on those Lami blanks.
