Recently finished up another Steffen... this time an ever popular 8' 3/4. Buckeye burl seat w/ a carved/blued butt cap... blue/green accents tie in the green agate nicely.

Absolutely stunning, I love the green accents. Will be ordering a Steffen in this size from you one day. Would have to spec a piece of meteorite like you have done in the past.

Very pretty-- love the cool pastel green accents and the butt cap -- how did you get the peppered, crater effect? is it some sort of hammered metal?

the butt cap is hand carved brass using a small engraving tool... then blued and polished to knock off the high spots, leaving the bluing in the crevices...

Very nice workmanship. I hope to achieve this level of rod building one day. I want to add ferrule bands to my builds, do you make those or buy them, if so where?

I've been building rods for 20 years and I don't come close to Matt's rods.

He makes his own ferule bands, turns his own inserts and in general puts together the most beautiful looking rods.

Thanks guys. Yes, all the turned metal hardware/wood turning is custom made by me. I experimented w/ making my own guides but it's tough to beat what Snake Brand and our agate artisans can produce... I've learned that if I can't make it as good or better than what's available, I should leave it to the experts. I will say if you get into this deep enough, nothing beats making all your own stuff. The possibilities really become endless!

Thanks for the reply, everyone on this forum have been very helpful and are glad to help those of us that are just getting started. I have been turning my own grips and just acquired a wood lathe so that I can start turning my own inserts. Maybe one day I will tackle the hardware also I have some machining in my background.

Bill,

great place to start w/ cork and wood. If you have some machining skills already there's nothing inherently complicated w/ most hardware... it's mostly just tubes... but fancy... or in some cases, really simple if you like the mid-century look... :)
