Hi guys,

a friend of mine own a Ted Simroe rod built from a boron (boron / graphite mix?) blank made by Rodon.
Can anyone decipher what the 'BGM 290' written on the rod means?

Jay,
I have no idea what the "BGM 290" indicates.

My Simroe rod that I obtained in 1984 directly from Rodon/REC is only marked with the maker and what is probably the model number of the 9 1/2' 7 wt rod.

Boron Graphite Model 290, 2pc 90 inches, 7'-6"

Some of the builders and manufacturers of that time period labeled rods that way.

Well I think found the answer without knowing :)
Boron Graphite Mix (or Model)
290 = 290 inches = (about) 7.5 ft

Thanks guys

.

Very cool. I have a 7wt that I really like and have been looking for a smaller one like your friends. They are not too common. I tried reaching out to Ted for more info but never received a response to my email.

Amazing blanks, I have a few in the shop. Any chance you could share a few more pics? I would love to see the Simroe appointments.

I have almost a full set of Ted Simroe Rodon Boron Rods the one I have all have a serial number
T-2763 2 piece 7’6” 3 wt
T-2804 2 Piece 8’0” 4 wt
T-2865
T-2906

The finest graphite rods ever made. the 3 wt protects 7 x tippets and their slow action is superb. Winston and Sweet Grass Rods in Twin Bridges borrowed all of the rods and did some deflection studies on them.

Etc.

Gregg, Doug has a 8’8” Rodon 4 wt. that the late Paul Brown made from a blank. It’s an interesting rod but is far to light in the tip for my tastes. I have never seen one of the shorter rods. I wonder how Ted’s current bamboo rods compare in action to those old boron/graphite rods?

Interesting - I have an 8'8" 4wt Rodon boron/graphite that Simroe made. The late Marty Goldberg bought it at the NJ store that the late Ron Kusse ran - this was back in the '80's. It is demanding with your casting stroke, but when I put myself into the right mood, it does have its own charm.

It makes sense to me that the late Paul Brown built up Doug's 8'8". There are a few of us who are able to tune into these kinds of slow smooth sticks, and I sure treasure the original Fenwick World Class series that I've scavenged up over the years. In addition to the couple 903L's I started with, I've got among others a 902 and 901.

Right now the recent Montana Brothers Rodworks 904L has the same design philosophies and I need to do some comparisons on the water.

Hal Bacon decades ago had the East Branch series, which were in the same vein. As for glass with similar actions, I suppose the original Winston Stalkers were reminiscent of these actions. More recently, I got a 7' 3wt glass from Art Weiler - he calls them Willow, and that's apt. I assume the white blank came from Japan.

All of these are in the opposite realm from the zippy, often soul-less four figure graphites.

The Montana Rod Smiths I have cast their photo types and was v very impressed with them and they are as close to the Rodon Models I have ever had the chance to cast. since I have never found a replacement for my 8 foot for a 4wt Rodon Boron I broke the tip on. I will contact the Montana Rod smiths and wait patiently for one when they get into final production
