PP,

Not much to say really. All learned through trial and error... no training at all... designs are usually organically come up w/ on the lathe... I enjoy putting small details, edge breaks, etc... into the builds... the details are intended to be small and only visible when looking up close. My fav. design features in most things are not designed to smack you in the face but rather be appreciated in use and through observation (for example I enjoy mid-century modern, bauhaus style). While i am measuring often for fit, most design work is done through feel and visuals.

-Matt

Matt, you have an innate sense of style, and yes, your stylistic touches are not "in your face" but rather subtle. That is what makes them appealing to me. I don't know which end is up on a lathe and would probably maim myself trying to learn machining on one. But, I know good design when I see it. One of the things I really like about building rods is that it is an art and a science. But that's another thread altogether.

Matt - There are some beautiful custom rods being done nowadays but you've been, and continue to be, at the top of my list. I'm proud to own one of your builds!

Beautiful rod and a great looking shop Matt. I remember the Steffen we had you build us to raffle. The day before the fund raiser, I showed it to my parents and one of their friends. None of them knew a thing about flyfishing. They knew fine craftsmanship though, and they marveled. My mother would even reference that rod when seeing what I was running off to the stream with. This Lemon Drop is every bit as exceptional as that was. That's a great build.
