Interested in seeing some rods that have been fished hard. Reason? I see all the nice brand new shiny rods with unsoiled corks and sparkling blanks. So what happens after a few trout, steelhead, brim, and other scaly battles? Does the translucent white rod still look great after all those years? Is there a reason brown seems to be a color favorite? Has that epoxy really changed the look of the rod wraps after yellowing? Maybe even a story about how the rod acquired that mojo.

Fenwicks really do age well. My brother has my grandfathers Fenwick from the '50s/'60s and it still fishes great and has held up really well. Heddon is another one of those companies that tends to age very well. Here's an old Heddon Pal Superlative being put to work. (sorry its not a close up) This one has a little oxidation on one of the guides, but other then that its fine. I passed this rod onto a buddy of mine as his first fly rod. He told me he took it to the high sierras and caught a bunch of fish in the backcountry on an ant pattern and outfished some of his buddies that were using spinners. He was pretty fired up and it was great to hear it was still getting use.

Here is my Fisher 6-7, built 25-30 years ago and fished anywhere from 5 to 75 times a year ever since. It's next to a mint (not anymore since the recent photo) Cortland Leon Chandler 9' for 6 on a Fisher blanks.

Image

Too much "mojo" on that Fisher to remember it all, and I never did take many photos of it astream, being too busy fishing. Here's one from 5 or 8 years ago.

Image

"Mojo" in progress on this more recently built Fisher 8' for 5. Caught a lot of good fish with it but as usual would rather have it in my hand than a camera.

I broke a Fisher graphite 5 wt. probably 10 years ago. Of the moments Ive broken a fly rod in my life, that was probably the saddest. Great little dry rod that could switch gears to streamer or nymph or whatever if needed.

Steffan 8.5' 6 wt.
Ready for new wraps and new grip. I have literally worn them out. One of the best rods I have ever owned.

Very cool pic Alec. How old is the Steffen? Whirl, what red color did you wrap your recent Fisher? I like that Winston Fisher look.

Let's keep this thread on rods with "mojo" because I know there are a lot more out there than mine. I'll put a link in up above to more on the Fisher, but let's see some more rods that could tell a lot of good stories going forward in this discu

This is my old FF79 with an early Pflueger Medalist. She's battle worn with a ridged grip and a bead head ding but still is smooth as silk. You can feel the mojo when fishing. Like an old pair of well worn gloves, it feels comfortable in hand with the confidence to get the job done.

A Bean's "LL" eight foot for a six weight--a Philipson Master by another name. It has been used, wraps refreshred with spar, picked up some scuffs and is overall unimpressive until you fish with it. Then I can't say enough. :hat

I fish the Valentine model 83 on the Steffan 8.5' for 6; the 76 is reserved for 7.5' and under five weights. I can't remember when I bought the blank; it was the year the model was introduced.. 5 or 6 years probably. I have fished it hard. Here's a pic when I was making it - no varnish on the wraps yet. I have found a short full-wells to be a perfect grip for this 3 piece; I really should buy a "back up" blank ... Alec

my first glass rod - 8' 5wt build on a Dale Clemens blank. Every time I think to replace the grip and reel seat I just can't bring myself to do it. I don't want to mess with the mojo! :eek

My FF806 - my dad bought it in the 70's for a trout trip to Idaho. I'd thought I'd lost it and found it a few years ago in the wrong rod tube in my basement after a bunch of moves. Decades of use, family connection, and plenty of fish. Particularly like it in local warm water ponds where you never know what you're going to hook!

I don't know about mojo but here are some pics of my first fly rod. I haven't fished it since the 70's but it went with me on my bike on countless days as a teenager, even into the woods on logging roads. We fished for everything and I'm pretty sure the scales that are still on it are from suckers. It's a 3pc, 9ft., 8wt. I thought about making a 6 footer out of the tip and middle sections but when I take it out of the tube that I made for it the smell brings a flood of memories. Then I think, "Nah, just leave it for what it is."

Now that is what I am talking about! The rod appears to have a bamboo like look to it. Has the paint just peeled off over time? Any stories?

Yes bamboo looking paint job that is peeling, He was from PA, I have some old pictures of him cleaning brookies, I remember as a kid not understanding the whole fly line thing, couldn't understand that pile of line on the pond bank, lol. That was after we migrated to Oklahoma. Never saw him trout fish with it. I think I will replace the guides and fish it, seems to like a 8 weight, possible an 7 it started to feel good with a 7 when I had quite a bit of line out, 9 felt heavy on it, need to put an 8 on it and see.

The first guide back from the tip is wound on with fine wire, guess he busted it off.

OKMike, a refurbishing of that rod would not change the mojo. Of course, keepkng it as it is, cleaning it, repairing that one wrap and revarnishing the other wraps would not change the mojo one big. Lucky you having a rod wish such fine heritage and mojo.

Paul

It's on my short list to do, working on a classic trout blank now, then I think I will pull all the guides off and replace with some a little larger, the existing ones are all pretty rough, rusty and corroded. Then i will fish it

I love this thread! probably because one of the reason I love fiberglass rod, it last forever!
I have a little yellow rod from Japanese Fenwick, it's a 3 weight 5 piece rod called "little yellow". I use this rod very often, but I don't think this rod has some exceptional characters, I think I use it simply because it is so compact and it fit my backpack well, so I bring it everywhere, even on the way to my office when I lived in Boston. My friend even made a wallet for it... can't believe time flyby so fast...
though it only being 8 years on this rod, I feel the rod is like been bought yesterday... : )ImageImageImageImage
cork is getting dark..

this fish was literally on a subway station - mud creek park, everyone was surprised that we got big carp in the center of Boston...
