sorry about lack of good closeups. my daughters canon does not have as good a macro mode as my minolta (now toast).

my next pictures will be of the 7 1/2 foot champion when it is done.

Larry,

That is well done! I'm amazed how much lighter the blank became after stripping the old finish. Nice choices on the hardware, wraps, and adornments.

Did you reshape the original grip or were you able to reglue the medallion?

One extremely outstanding rehab, Im not familiar with the 880 the blank looked alot like some of the earlier 2a's I always thought the color was tabacco, your skill has done you justice though, those feather inlays are absolutely awsome.
What weight is the rod, most of the really good W&M rods of the period I have were bass weight rods.
That is for sure one impressive interpretation of a vintage W&M, I dare say you not only did them justice, you honored them with your selection of their vintage rod.

Thank you for the compliments. i always wanted to create a rod with a "southwest" look. the rod handles seven wt lines well. in the salt (last picture) i used a rio t8 line. that is basically a sinking 30' level shooting head. like leadcore. rod felt like i needed just a little more line wt. what i will probably do is splice 15 feet of t14 to a tip of 13 feet of t8. it also handles a wt forward 8 floating line well.

i did not have to reshape the handle. i just cleaned it up. did not touch the medalion.

those rods were all an amber colore. over the years whatever they coated them with turned dark. remove a guide and you can see the original blank color. very cane like.

i have the champion in the works. doing that in a very traditional classic cane look with red wraps and black tipping.
the reel seat and handle will be undisturbed. its already great looking.

As always, outstanding work Larry! I love the way you tied in the reel seat colors with the weps. Class all the way.

My hollowglass higgins is just sitting, waiting to be wrapped up. I have the grip section, ferrules, and tip all done ... just need to get to the guides. I hope to find time to finish that up soon. I went with a classic black aluminum downlocking seat and fenwick grip.

Can't wait to see pics of the champion.

Lou
