Well thanks, gentlemen. This has been the next best thing to fishing or owning a few of those rods. Duff, go to your printer and run this all off so you have hard copies to save with the rod. Use top quality bond paper and have it laminated or otherwise preserved. (I know, you probably already did). I had one fine letter from Mr. Morgan in response to a product inquiry I made in the late '70s; saved it, but not too carefully and it got damaged. I have several fly rods I'd have preferred to lose than that letter. As always, it is a joy to read Tom Morgan's coverage of fly rods.

Hello Doc, Duff & others,

You have an impressive array of Winston fiberglass-congratulations! I wish I would have saved more of them.

Yes, the wrap color variation comes from the varnish or other coatings turning color over the years. A good method of helping to determine how much the color has changed is to remember the decals were ALWAYS silver.

Best,
Tom Morgan

What a neat fact to learn about the decals all being silver! Much has been made over the difference between rods with silver vs gold decals; now we know the truth. In the immortal words of a famous man: DOH!

What a wonderful thread this is and thanks to all that contributed, especially Mr. Morgan. And like Frog said, this is what makes the FFR so special.

I thought it might be appropriate to wrap up this wonderfully informative thread by showing a shot of the little rod that started it off. Thanks to all for all your great replies.

I hesitated to post ... but that is a fine rod with a great history. I was having trouble remembering the year that I bought my 6' two weight from Tom. Seems like it was 1979 (he was in Twin Bridges at the time) but my memory isn't so good anymore so could be a year or so later. Mine had a cigar shaped grip with a ring and cap. A sweet rod for sure. I don't recall it being called a Stalker though.

Spectacular rod and excellent choice in reels too! Video even better than the rods & reels...

I have marveled at this thread for years... so glad to see it brought back. Well done.

in the notes on the video link,
you list the rod as a #2/3.

curious, is it too slow/full-flexing for your tastes with the maker rated #4?

just a casual observation.

Video is very well produced. Nice work!
You really do get a sense on how "willowy" the taper is, on a few of those slo-motion hook sets.
Cool to see.

Just read through this thread. Wow. What kind and thorough responses from Tom M. And yes, thanks Jay for reviving this great historical read!

The rod in the video (the video isn't mine by the way! It's a video by the guys at Headhuters fly shop in Craig, Montana) is a different model (7.5ft #2-3). Here is the a list of models that were available:
Image

I've cast it with a #3 as well as a #4. Both line weights casts very smooth.
The rod doesn't feel slow (in the catalog labelled as 'medium-slow') to me, a very pleasurable action that still has a lot of power in the butt section. I can still cast pretty tight loops without a problem. The sweet spot seems to be up to 40ft.

love it. I'm now the owner of the little rod that started this thread (though Duff is a dear friend it did not come from him but made its way to me through other channels) and a handful of other Winstons. I'm inspired to get the camera out tomorrow and take some photos to share. these rods bring a smile to my face whenever I fish them.

Does anyone own a Winston catalog from the era 1975 up to (around) 1985 with the Stalker series described? If so could you please take a picture and post it here? Please mention from which year the catalog page is. Much appreciated!

Thanks for a good look into the history of our little corner of fly fishing! Also good to see that at least a few of the fly shops listed in the piece are still going.
