Netted in two feet of water at the bottom of Montana's Madison River.
It's not a San Juan worm it isn't red. Is it a Don Juan Worm? Or would it be, if I made a yellow-brown San Juan Worm, instead of a red one? I'm gonna work on this.

I tie my San Juan Worms using Suede Leather Strips - Gold 1150 Hooks, Ribbed with gold wire in multiple colors....They worked in Montana for years and now in the Ozarks - red purple and tan

My son has a spring branch running along the edge of his property that is full of those worms. I've also seen them in the edges of old mill ponds in the north east. Kinda explains why red wrigglers make good bait.

It certainly looks like garden hackle to me.

From what I remember they are close relatives, but I don't expect to find earth worms under a foot or two water on a regular basis. They may actually be amphibians, I guess, but where I've seen them they appeared to always be present underwater rather than in the earth nearby.

This did come up in my dip net, in two feet of flowing water. I suppose it could have been an accidental drifter. I plan to do a bit more dip netting this summer.

Thanks Carl.Makes sense as to what carp may be rooting around for.I was fishing last week for bluegills, seeing if any are on beds yet at BOW i know very well.It was quite muddied up and i assumed the males were doing their tornado dance making beds.No it was some very big carp really burying their heads in the decaying weeds from last season.Just tearing everything up.Gonna bring a heavy dip net next time and do some probing in the muck. This water still has a few nice bluegills and some very big carp.
