I bought some crow wings to try this pattern from the well-known book, The Art of Tying the Wet Fly & Fishing The Flymph.

Black Gnat:

Hook: Maruto D82 - Size 14
Thread: Pearsall's Gossamer - Claret
Body: 3 fibers from a crow secondary wing feather
Hackle: Purplish black Starling

Notes: I omitted the optional wing of Starling since the picture of the fly on page 113 didn't have a wing.
Tried to keep the hackle short to match the picture.
On the fly on the left, I ribbed the body with 6X tippet since the crow herl seems very fragile.
Body can also be tied with black silk.

Does anyone have experience fishing this pattern?

Tight Lines- Ken

I haven't used those materials, but the style of fly is one of my standards. I particularly like the hackle of the left fly. You got the sparseness that I try for.
I rarely use a wing on wets or dries, tying in the round gives the fish the same silhouette from any direction and the fly never lands upside down.
