Here’s a fly I developed for super spooky trout in slow, clear, pounded water. The fish tend to be spooked by flash and splash. I fish it as a dropper on a dry fly. This is my most productive pattern.

It’s a hybrid rs2 and zebra midge. Black 2mm tungsten bead, 16/18 hook, black thread body, small black wire, and a clipped cdc wing for movement.

Too big for a trico or midge. What do the trout think it is?

In a #20 or 22 it will be killer on the Madison in April. Definite midge pattern leaving off the tail.

I think the fish are taking it for a bwo, though the fly is much darker. There were some baetis hatches yesterday. I caught 6 trout on the same fly, and it is no worse for wear. I coat the body with Sally Hansens and use coq de leon for the tail.

That fly makes me hungry - I can only imagine what it does for the trout...
Its got a lot going for it... thanks for allowing us to experience it as well...

the CDC might keep a bubble there too...

Here’s a pic of the fly in action yesterday. The trout couldn’t take his eye off it.
