They're hatching now, here in Montana. A cold front just moved in. And boom. There they go.

This one uses the same frond of duck flank to make both abdomen and wing. You can use other wing materials. I like Senyo Laser Dub a lot. For mayfly wings.

Yes that's the point. Most sparsely tied spring Creek like dry fly mayflies do not float well outside the slick/glassy water context.

I call these Right Hackle flies. You can put anything underneath, as bushy or as sparse as you want.

A long loose front to back figure right wrap underneath bastes the hackle tuft temporarily in place. Glue (any kind) fixes the hackle permanently in place.


It's a Right Hackle because the hackle fibers get glued on at right angles to the shank.

And because it's the right way to do it?
