Lately I’ve been on a kick of tying flies primarily composed of grouse. I’m a huge fan of soft hackles and wet flies, so grouse is the perfect material.

Step 1: procure some grouse! I recommend using one of these:

Step 2: tie on! Here are some examples of what I’m tying:

Materials needed

The Famous Grouse

Grouse and Gold

Step 3: hit the river! Even on highly pressured waters like the South Platte, these flies perform (especially the soft hackles).

My son in law hunts, from last fall I have Ruffed, Sharp Tail, and Sage grouse and a couple kinds of quail. Other seasons he's given me duck and pheasant. I haven't used any of the recent acquisitions yet, but, I'm sure they will be more spider like than winged wets. I'm a lazy tyer.

excellent.. I've been tying a lot of pheasant recently. The hen hackle works nicely for soft hackle, there is one place in WY that has legal hen shooting and I try to get one every year for the feathers.
Also a modified Carey Special using rear half body of pheasant tail and front body of fluff fibres from the rump feathers..

never yet saw a grouse in hunting season though.. ha.
Is that a Beretta ? [Please remember, we are a fishing forum... We don't want the Internet firewall companies evaluating as something different. Tom]

I suspect sharpies and bobwhites would make good tying material too!

Nothing wrong with spiders. The swing caddis and grouse and gold patterns are responsible for more fish than any other flies in my box.
