Used to think bigger was better when it came to bass flies. 2 - 2/0 was the norm.
Still in use for those “go big” outings, but I’ve found I catch just as many large bass on smaller flies.

Firehole 315 or 316 size 6 are my go-to hooks. The funky beetle looking fly is tied on a Tiemco 8089.

Pictured are some of my most productive bass flies.

Show yours!

I tied this on a #8, and tie streamers on 10 & 12 and I fish with a 3,4 &5 wt

Amazing work. Swedish, I don't know 'match the hatch', but the bug with the orange skull excites me. Delta bass would murder that I'm sure.

For largemouth, black cricket.

For smallmouth: crawfish.

Thanks,

I’ve been tying some Gartside Hopper variants for high country trip but I’m planning on tying some in 4-6 too for bass.

Appreciate the replies.

The orange headed bug is a style I enjoy tying and fishing quite a lot, surface or with sink tip lines.

Checking out how tie the Cartside hopper for sure. Interesting pattern to adapt to a large size.

Kelly Galloup has a recent video that stirred my interest in the Gartside Hopper:

For my larger bass flies some basic design elements are always used.
Buoyant hollow hair head. Deer belly hair or Elk. Often less densely packed than I see most tying.
Sparse durable midsection. This helps the hook point sit lower; I’m convinced this aids hook-ups. And it’s a great spot to grab with your pliers.
Maribou and other feathers Deceiver style, tied in at the rear of the hook to avoid fouling.

Nice. Floating or sink line?

I like patterns that have a relatively “narrow” profile when casting, but have volume in the water.

sinking....always my first choice.

That's why I like fishing with bucktail, super easy to cast, yet has the presence in the water and pushes a bunch of water...kinda like your deer head on yours.

that's a terrific minimalist crawfish, very nice..

all our smallmouth have gone deep for the summer, I battle to find them now in the deep reservoirs. In a month or so the shad spawn will have flooded the water with forage, and it's a lost battle to interest them in anything artificial..
which is a prolix way of saying I don't have any productive bass flies ;-)

tied up an imitation of a jig-n-pig, using a sculpin head, many wraps of marabou just behind, with mottled rubber legs, and a tail of pine squirrel plus more legs. This works sometimes if the fish are around,

for largemouth, best fly I have is a 5-6" streamer with a long deerhair head about 2", short sparkle chenille body, then tail of hackles tied Deceiver-style with some flashabou. It's a brute to cast though so often try to fish something else..
