This is a quick tie...crease fly style. Foam head w/big eye, natural materials for the body/tail, and some poly fibers for the transitional halo. Saltwater flashabou single strand on each side (not visible on the pic.) I used a thin coat of UV resin over the head. A striper slayer...easycast on a 10wt.

Looks like an up-eye hook ? Is that preferred for this type of fly, and reason for the choice?

Thank you. I needed a hook with certain gap size/proportion for the pattern. I happened to have Gamakatsu Octopus in this size. Would prefer a straight eye, but Gamakatsu Octopus hooks are of good quality. However, I am not a fan of beak point hooks for striped bass. Up-eye is not much of an issue, though.

I don't think up straight or down matters too much on a popper diver ,i keep my rod tip low.I know of some tyers who use jig hooks for poppers and swear by them. The octopus hooks are my favorite hook for lots of non fly fishing rigs.
