I’m new to tying, and I’d like to get some vendor recommendations for ordering materials online.

I’ll kick it off with a shop I found recently. The Ole Florida Fly Shop out of Boca Raton seems to have a good selection of materials and offers free shipping in the US with no minimum amount.

What type of fishing are you tying for? I tend to go with Feathercraft for trout and some warmwater stuff and Saltwaterflies.com for saltwater (I guess that's kinda obvious).

I buy mostly from a couple local shops.
Some online stores that I have not used yet but that were recommended on other forums and book marked.

I’m focusing on streamer patterns for bass and trout for now because that’s how I fish most often. I figure I’ll pick up trout nymphs and dries later on.

Thanks for the tips on all the shops, guys.

The Global Fly Fisher article for inexpensive materials from sources other than fly shops will be a great resource.

For synthetics at a reasonable price, Fly Tyers Dungeon has some gift boxes that are good.
I think the last feather order I placed was from Hook And Hackle.

I would choose a handful of flies that your are going to tie and get materials for those. (black, brown and Olive wolly buggers).
I would concentrate on getting good materials for the few patterns you are going to start with.

The problem with inexpensive material from other sources is you end up with a lot of material you will never use. Concentrate on flies that you will use first.
The one item I would stock up on from the craft shop is foam for gartside gurglers or stealth bombers, which are easy foam popper/slider patterns.

The good thing about buying quality material is that it lasts a long time. I'm still working off Hoffman Saddles I bought in the '90s.

I appreciate the advice, Carlz. The stealth bomber is one of my go-to topwater patterns, and I’m looking forward to learning to tie it in white and black because most fly shops around here only stock it in chartreuse. It will likely be my first floating bug to learn after I tie a few streamers.

As you may already know, the stealth bomber was designed by a Georgia guide by the name of Kent Edmonds, so if you fly fish for shoal bass around here, it’s proper etiquette to have a few stealth bombers in your box out of respect for Mr. Edmonds. I’m sure they work equally well for smallmouth, and big bluegills love them too.

Picking 3-5 patterns that work and buying only quality material for them and nothing else is wonderful advice, 40 years too late in my case;

I have used many on the lists provided, but recently have been using "FlyFishFood" out of Utah. Someone on this forum pointed them out, and I love the place. They ship very promptly and have a great inventory.

I’m adding dreamdriftflies.com to my list of favorites. Excellent selection, reasonable shipping, and the MFC hooks are very good for half the price of Tiemco.

Trev has a pretty good comprehensive list above.

Personally, http://www.jsflyfishing.com is great and quite comprehensive for the types of flies I tie.

If I can get it from the Caddis Fly or Deschutes Angler, I will....or, I'll run down to the Portland Fly Shop as they have certain things and I can actually get my hands on it.

Cheers!

I recently bought 500 dry & caddis hooks from http://wholesaleflycompany.com/
So far so good, price is good, service prompt, hooks sharp and didn't break or bend in the vise.

I try to order from fly fish food a couple times a year because I love his videos. JSflyfishing has a nice selection of about everything.
Sure wish I would’ve listened when they told me to pick a handful of flies and just get those materials. Way too late to save me now.
