A simple cool little fly for bass and panfish. It can be fished as a dry fly or retrieved like a popper. Very cool simple pattern on a #12 hook it can be fished on a 3wt. Enjoy

Similar idea with this pattern. Sparse and easy to cast.

No name, but extremely effective.

Basic design elements in my panfish and bass flies: Buoyant head of loose deer belly or elk hair, hackle or dubbed hot spot, sparse mid (I feel this improves hook-ups, causes the hook point to trail lower, and allows for a spot to grip with a pliers, and a lightly dressed hook end (in this example two small pheasant feathers. But maribou works well.

Learn how to tie a Zebra Midge, Elk Hair Caddis, Zoo Cougar, and Dyret (Davie McPhail)....using those design elements your bases are covered. Add in a parachute dry fly and Deceiver (loose feathers tied in at the hook bend makes to much sense)........

Swede, What size hooks or specific hook works best for your pattern when bass fishing?

For those of you into Trout Spey these sparse deer hair head flies would work great on the swing for trout and smallies.

I’m getting into Spey or switch casting in the surf and may try it for largemouth bass

Firehole 315 and 316 hooks in size 6 for the second fly pictured and most frequently fished for panfish and bass. Not sure which hook the yellow fly is tied on. But barbless in the smaller hook sizes for what I tie now.

2,1,1/0 for the larger patters typically.

Swede, Thank you for the hook suggestions and thanks Flybuddy for the original post suggestion. Tried a couple in extended shank size 12. Need to give them a try.

They absolutely do! And instead of a strike indicator....my go to skinny stream method, even in the winter, is a similar pattern with a weighted dropper.
