Golden Stones, Royal Coachman wets, Purple and Starling, Red and Starling, RS2s, and of course Bulldog's Swimming BWO. Oh--and a variety of midges of course.

I've been fooling around with some salty patterns; dreaming a bit about bonefish and reds. I've yet to fly fish for ANYTHING in the salt, and it's getting harder and harder to wait.

Who knows if these would work or not. I've already thought of a few modifications.

Been going for "Gartside-esque" ties recently - a little marabou, a little saddle hackle and a lot of movement in the water!

Thinking LMB and maybe some very hungry, pissed off nocturnal Brownie! ;)

basically just filled up my winter steelhead box....mostly had to replace the ultra-simple pink bugger thing on the bottom. That's probably what I fish the most of, second would be a couple of those leeches on the top. most often it's pink, occasionally when I'm bored with pink, I'll throw on one of the black leeches when swinging, but because I've gravitated more towards dead drifting flies, it's still usually the flies on the bottom, no split, just have them tied in a variety of weighted eyes. Of course, no box would be complete without at least a couple of dries. While I've never hooked a winter steelhead on a dry, my buddy who I fish with the most, has actually hooked one super aggressive buck on a dead drifted dry (note the Oct. Caddis in addition to the pink/white gurglers)...a few egg patterns that I'll use in ultra low water conditions, but I tend to like to fish something that will swing better at the end of a drift, hence the bugger-ish flies.

Cheers

ugh, 24? midges? I'm currently in a swap where I'm going to tie some 18-20 BWOs and haven't started yet because I'm dreading it (and they look huge next to a 24).

What's the body material for the "pink bugger thing" flies? For the landlocked, I'm confident those would be decent crappie, walleye, and white-bass flies.

It's a type of sparkle chenille. I also tie them with standard chenille and honestly I don't think it makes a difference at all (at least for steelhead, for other fish, it might). It's actually the exact fly that I have the best success with fishing for surf perch (different colors, although pink works there too).

any good ideas on the best way to get eyes to stick on saltwater patterns? I used locktite superglue and they came off within about 15 minutes of fishing them.

Use stick on eyes that aren't very thick and use one of the UV, polyurethane, or epoxy clear coatings which can cover the entire eye, sealing the entire eye within the coating.

Thanks, that's what I'd normally do, but I'm trying to just get the eyes to stick on without having a full epoxy head. (those eyes also were "stick-on" eyes, but I figured it would need more than just that).

a few BWO dun/cripple/emerger for a swap. Pretty basic pattern, but one that works very well for me...if I can see it on the water as it rides very low, but floats very well with the synthetic wing.

Midge emergers, seems that I spend more and more time fishing small these days. Top Secret midges (Dorsey) are my current project. Recently tied some Pink Squirrels to try out on my next trip.
