Recently I came across a vintage fly tying lot at a yard sale. Picked everything up for $40. There’s ALOT of cool old thread, hooks, and materials. Most of it is NOS. After sorting through I found there was a small patch of polar bear hide so I am trying my first hand at tying “classic” style flies to frame.

A friend of mine lives on a small island in Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. For a while he has been using standard down-rigger gear to catch lake trout.
This winter he asked me to tie a dozen or so large streamer patterns that he could fish behind a flasher. He asked for large hooks & barbs left on "please", for he knows that I only fish barbless.
We are attempting to develop large bait fish fly patters that may work deep down in fresh water. I suggested trying salt water EP fiber patterns built around size 2/0 (or larger) Gamakatsu B10S hooks.
I've already sent him four flies with mottled brown backs & polar bear, now black & polar bear, next a dark purple with the same colour abdomen.

"Hersh", we're experimenting with salt water patterns in the fresh. These flies are originally intended to be cast then retrieved. I hope to report how this project works out.
I too thought about how these puppies might track behind a cannon ball & flasher & how the rigid eyes would affect their action. I suggested to my down-rigger friend that he take the troll real slow at first. I may be able to borrow a table-top testing tank to see how these minnows move in a current.

Excellent,i have so much material and enjoy tying but you can only tie so many warmwater flies.Never thought to try some big steamers for deep trolling. My son is working on his captain's license and getting a charter boat.Looking forward to see what works for you.

The layered colour blend of the "Tie-dye" tuna reminds me of Chas. De Feo's flies. Beautiful!
Is this fly made with a hollow built tie?
Curious of how you layered the fibers, both natural & synthetic. I am trying to come up with effective baitfish patters to use in fresh water.
Thanks in advance for any info re the tuna fly/

thanks!

it's partially hollow, partially standard. The bucktail in there is tied in standard (I picked fibers halfway up the tails so they wouldn't flair quite so much when really cinched down), there is some squimpish fiber that is tied hollow style (the purple), but then the lighter blue squimpish on the top is standard tie. I didn't want it to have too much vertical thickness. The feathers are mostly in doubles, laterally (except the two longest ones on the tail, those are more dorsal). I haven't played around too much with the squimpish fiber, but it feels and looks great!

Nice salty streamers, Clarkman. I’ve been working on some double deceivers. The first is pretty standard at 6”. The second is 5” with an EP fox brush head and fish mask. Looking forward to a side by side comparison to see if my local bass prefer one over the other.

I really like those!

I finally got back onto the vise after a little bit of a hiatus. Took a little over an hour to construct this little 13" trash panda game changer for tiger muskies.

Since I've been getting my ass handed to me on the tiger musky front this year, I may as well keep tying and keep trying...

10" single in more natural colors for my local waters...

Here's the latest: Trash Panda Game Changer's (can't really see the segments while dry, but moves super sexy like they're supposed to when wet)

Also tied up a leech or two...

plus, filling up my current "match the hatch" trout box....find the salmon, and you'll find the trout.

Cheers!

These #12 pheasant tails catch fish all year long. I like them with some partridge, the steelhead seem to agree

Another tiger musky sized GC.

you can get a better idea of the segmentation here:

It swam as intended and then some, but alas, no fish really cared enough to taste it.... :lol

Curious, do your Tigers start to feed better as Winter approaches? That last fly, we have Squirrels in our yard smaller than that, I think anyway. :eek
