Mainly smallmouth and red eye bass in northern Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

With the start of runoff in the high country the water is high and murky. I find that this time of year calls for swinging soft hackles, and also for weighted nymphs. That said, I’ve tied up a cross between a euro nymph and a classic soft hackle.

This is my first time tying them with a hot spot on the collar. I think a little zest will help given the conditions though.

Update: mission accomplished!

Thanks! Stripers are a great fly rod fish... lots of fun. And you don't need to struggle throwing big flies to catch big stripers; small, easy-casting sand eel patterns work very well.

My all-time favorite is the diminutive Ray's Fly, tied on a size 2 Eagle Claw 254SS:

Good looking bug, Allegheny.

I call this one the space bunny. Hopefully some fish will be chomping on it over the weekend.

Space Bunny...I like it!

"downsized"

I don't usually put eyes on my bucktail flies because it kills the specific action that I'm looking for. Enter Copic markers....

Cheers!

Vlad,

Some innovative adaptations on an old standard with proof in the pudding.

Any details on the rod and reel combo would be nice too. Is the rod among your custom offerings?

My neighborhood has been hit pretty hard by coronavirus and the arrival of striped bass has been a blessing. Very consistent fishing at this point and hoping for arrival of some larger fish in the mix any day now. I put waders on every day, grab a rod and just walk out and start fishing...

Heddonist, this red rod was a 9’ 9wt prototype...I made a short/preordered run on a 8’6” 9wt version in green glass, but stopped due to limited interest in heavy glass rods. The reel is now discontinued TFO Hayden 1NS, designed by T. Hayden from Australia, but manufactured in Korea. Little heavy, classic cork drag, and perfect balance for 9’ saltwater glass. Built like a tank for sure and very reliable....compares favorably to Abel/Pate/Tibor reels.

Thanks for the comments,

V.

I'll always love your pics, Vlad!

Threw together a few articulated bucktail bass bugs tied in the same style as most of my musky stuff...

I like the use of bucktail in those clarkman!
Here's a Fran Betters Haystack with gray beaver dubbing on a Tiemco 102y hook.

With all the rod building it’s been forever since I’ve tied a fly. A bit rusty but was nice to tie last night.

A few Usuals
