Wondering if anyone has tried pre-treating silk with CP for use on trim wraps?

I have not done that, but if I want the main wraps to go translucent with varnish or epoxy:
1. do the main wrap
2. put a coat of epoxy or two coats of varnish on the main wrap
3. add the trim wrap
4. CP the trip wrap with a fine point brush. Don't worry about getting some of the CP on the main wrap.
5. finish all wraps with remaining varnish or epoxy

I have only done this with water-based CP

This seems like a solid method, thank you for the suggestion.

what color of trim band are you planning on? For black or white trim bands you can use India ink to color the ends of the silk. Here is how it works:

I once had to do a trim band on a rod for a guy who wanted translucent wraps and a single solid color trim band.
I did similar to Eastprong. Wrapped and a coat of epoxy.
I then cut several inches of thread for the trim band and soaked it with Al’s CP. removed some of the excess by pulling it between my fingers. I then just tied an overhand knot and pulled it tight to the main wrap. Burnished the knot down and then trimmed after it was dry. Then second coat of wpoxy

Thanks for the responses fellas. Cheffy, I’m basically looking to accomplish the same effect and was thinking of using the technique you described, not necessarily single bands though.

Matt, I’ve got two spools of kimono silk, one is #370 Teriyaki and the other is #305 Maui sands. Not only would these make nice contrasting wraps, they also perfectly match the hair color of my daughters. So there’s a bit of sentimental attachment.

I may end up just using cp for the entire wrap if the alternative ends up being too much hassle. Either way, will run a few tests before committing and report back.
