Minimum Stent Length

I’m planning my lightest rod build yet, a J. Green 6’9” 2wt, and I want to keep the build components as light as possible. I’m using a slide band reel seat with cork insert from Proof and a 0.25” diameter solid fiberglass stent to attach the reel seat.

Because the reel seat is cork, I think the stent will need to run the full 3.75” inside the reel seat. What is the shortest length I should use for the stent as it travels into the blank under the grip? I would normally go about 3.5” into the blank with the stent, but would ~2” be secure enough for a 2wt?

Curious what the butt diameter is? Is a stint really needed as the bore hole could be increased?

Good question - I’ll measure the butt of the blank when it arrives. I may not even need a stent. The reel seat bore is 0.376”.

Yea, being a 2 weight it is possible that a stint will not be needed.

I’ve recently built an eight foot four weight McFarland Perpetual with a cork reel seat. I did not require a stent so I doubt you’ll need on your two weight.
Same with my seven foot three inch Steffens.
The inside diameter of my slide bands are .740 inch so perhaps a little larger than most.

Bingo. A cork insert is easy to bore out or simply build right on the rod. No stent needed. Once you use one, you may wonder why you ever used hardwood inserts.

If you do end up deciding for a stent a want to want to keep it light, go with carbon fiber. There is a significant weight increase on a short, light rod with a solid glass stent. Honestly, I can tell the difference on an 8.5’ 6-weight.

But like the others said, just ream out the cork a little if necessary.

Thanks for all the advice! Somehow I hadn’t even considered that reaming the cork reel seat should be just as easy as reaming the cork grip. Glad I asked!

Should you need to put a stent in, bear in mind that Lamiglas uses glass spigots that stick into the blank about an inch.
