I searched but could not find any info......I am looking to purchase a Cherrywood Fly Rod 8' CRC 40 that is identified as being manufactured in Mexico, and want to replace the grip section. Does anyone know if you can separate the rod from the grip using heat?
Thank you so much for your assistance.
Steve

If you replacing the cork just cut it off with a knife. Reel seat it depends on what it was glued you might be able to use hot water and replace everything from the butt. If you are buying a cork grip already shaped you can also remove the guides on butt section and slide it down from the ferrule end.

Hi Steve,

Heat does not generally work for removing a grip. Cork does too good of a job insulating. I like to use a utility knife and score the cork (being careful to not touch the blank) and then you can chip it off until you get down to the epoxy. To clean up the blank (doesn't have to be perfect) you can use a file or sandpaper.

The summary from Matt about does it. Here's another. Possibly your rod has a foam/hypalon grip. That, too, can be sliced and peeled off. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50374&p=218546&hilit=cut+cork+knife#p218546

As long as we're listing options for EVA grips, X-shrink tube overlay makes a nice grip.
I've used this stuff on rod grips, index-position grips on kayak paddles, saving splitting foam grip on my stake-out pole.
It's really easy to apply using boiling water from a tea kettle - pour from the center to the outside.

Great suggestion. I can think of other uses for that stuff.
And thanks to all who also offered information.
