Here is my latest build (lucky # 13) and let me first say that I absolutely love the action of this rod.

It fits perfectly in the line-up between my Steffen 7’6” 3/4 wt and my Steffen 8ft 5/6 wt.
My goal is for it to be a perfect all-around rod.
Dusty was super helpful on the phone and modified his 8ft taper to this 7’9” version for me.

I have two Steffen 8ft 4/5 wts and they are both more of a 4/5 wt. In contrast, this LR Co 5wt has that “little extra zip” in it that I like on the forward cast as the line sings thru the guides. Blindfolded it feels more like the natural “middle child” in between the 7’6” Steffen 3/4 and the 8ft Steffen 5/6.

Here it is in it’s black tux - nothing too fancy, just simple functional and classy - was the vibe I was going for here.

Nice work ! Something about black wraps on a black blank.........Definitely falls into the simple yet elegant category. We must have been on the same page recently as I just finished up a LR Headwaters 804/3 a few weeks ago. Black main wraps ( tipped ) on black blank, RL seat and of course one of Mike's bags. And ironically have even paired it with an old 40's era Hardy LRH Lightweight, similar in size and weight to your Young built Lightweight. Again, nice work and great choice of reels !

Thanks for the kind words

Great minds must think alike
:-)

It has a really nice progressive action which I really like.
One of the other really cool things about this blank is that there is very little bounce/vibration/oscillation/wobble ? after each stroke.

I’m sure there’s a better technical term for it that I’m drawing a blank on…. someone here will know the exact term.

I’m really looking forward to getting it out on the water.

Damping--easily misspelled as "dampening," but usually clear from context what is meant. Good term to search out here relative to fly rods.

Beautiful rod! Dusty does superb work. I’ll get a Western Glass rod in the not too distant future … I hope!

I like the grip. Did you fashion it yourself?

A couple folks have asked so I’ll post this here:
I’ve tried numerous lines and for this blank I like a true to weight DT5 line the best. It does everything I ask it to without thinking about it. A true to weight WF5 works really well too, but personally I like the DT5 better.

Great looking build - love the simplicity! Funny that I’ve also been looking at options in this range to bridge the gap between my 7’6” Steffen 3/4 and 8’ Steffen 5/6.

The Steffen 4/5 is an obvious contender, but I had also thought about the ********* 805. I would be using it in similar warmwater fishing scenarios for redeye bass. What kinds of flies are you throwing with your ********* 795?

Mostly #8 & #10 bead head wooley buggers,
# 8 & 10 clousers with bead chain eyes,
Hoppers, poppers & various foam bodied terrestrials,
Hopper/nymph dropper combo.

Also fished it with a Teeny T130 dredging the bottom of the deep/slow pools with streamers and crawfish patterns and it flexed pretty deeply with that line but still had a surprising amount of reserve power in the butt and happily shot the shooting head and weighted streamers nicely - much better than I was expecting.

Wow !!! First Class in every aspect , and you are correct , not withstanding with many others on this forum , Dusty is just about as good as it gets in the helpful category , my experience has been that you just can’t seem to go wrong with anything ********* !!! Amazing and Enjoy !!!
