I had been planning on building a Sage SFL 580 this winter, but have been struggling with finding the closest approximate guide thread color to match the factory build.

I had posted the question in a FB rod building group, to find one of the first responders to be someone who had the original guide thread from the 80’s, who had offered to send it to me (from Florida to Canada) for free. I had offered a bunch of times to pay for the thread and shipping, but he refused, only asking me to send him a picture of a mural recently made of a singer of a punk band we both enjoyed from my home town of Edmonton, Alberta, who died. Someone we both met as an early adult.

Thanks again Bill Grady from Vero Beach, Florida. Super grateful! I love moments like these.

[I moved this thread to Rod Building due to the subject. Is it an NCP thread? Tom]

Being color blind I cannot help thread color, but always heard Chestnut Brown.
What a joy this will be. Thanks for including us along.

Tough rod to find and a real joy to cast.

There was a local guy who was getting rid of rods because he was retiring from fly fishing because of health issues. I bought the Sage SFL580 blank and a lamiglas SFL90 for $110 cdn.

Damn, you're lucky! I will tell you I have a blank built SFL580 that is one of my all time favorite rods period. I fish it as a 4wt with both Rio gold wf4 and cortland 444 wf4 and its a rocket launcher. I fished a spot I have hit many times with graphite rods up in the Catskills. Fish almost always rise along the far bank, but the far bank is tough to get to. its a steep rocky cliff, while you can access the closer side easily with a nice sandy bank and wadeable water. anyway, I took the SFL580 out to try there and was tossing BWO emergers (size 18) and hitting the opposite bank! It was wild. I couldn't do that with any of the graphite rods I had used in that spot previously. I caught a bunch of fish I couldn't have previously hoped to even access. you seriously have a gem on your hands with that 580. I would really love to get my hands on the size down just to compare.

Was that a diss on my wrapping abilities?? lol

Tons there, hard to see from the picture angle. Probably build 6 rods with the amount of thread there.

What a great treat! Wondering if there is any identification on the spool regarding line color? A name or number? Gudebrod?

thanks
