Finally, after getting sidetracked several times, I finished the Epic 580 build. I used Snake brand reel seat with an insert that Mike suggested for me and eco coated Snake brand lite guides.

That's a really nice build. The variegated thread and the rattan grip go really nicely together. The whole thing looks really classy.

Looks great. The colors of the blank, thread, and seat insert come together nicely. Bravo.

Two more projects. Completed a travel rod blank (graphite, I know). It’s a 9’ 5wt 7 piece for a couple trips I’m taking this year.

The other is a heddon pal pro weight 8383 7.5’ 6wt. I stripped it down, took off the bad wraps and finish. Still need to do one more strip coat on it. Pics below.

the Pal is looking good..

new guides for a glass baitcaster, Abu Parazoom 182. The old guides were badly grooved after the rod did duty as a Boy Scout catfishing-rod on the muddy Colorado river..
I probably did some good damage myself fishing for African catfish back in the day.

Not me or my catfish, but gives the idea - lots of mud, big strong long-running fish..

Old look,

Couldn't find wire guides to match exactly, some generic Mudhole stainless steel with inserts are acceptably close. The original wraps had white trim bands drawn on. I don't have a white pen for doing that so did actual trim wraps instead.

Took it fishing, two spots, four hours, eight different bait types and flavors, zero fish.. better luck next time we hope.

Almost done. Epoxy is on the rod turner. I just need another coat of varnish on the tip section and a few touch ups.

It’s still winter up north, right?

Love that McFarlamd GTX - how does it cast?

Thanks. I haven’t cast it yet. Just the waggle test, which is to say I don’t know anything useful.

I did cast one of these at the Montana Clave in 2016, and it was a lot of fun. Fast in a way, but not at the same time. I remember being surprised by how tight my loops were. Obviously, it’s been too long to remember much more than it was fascinating.

Glacier Rambler, That penmanship is fantastic. And the epoxy on the signature lock looks fantastic.

Agree with Carl! I don't know how you guys get epoxy on large signature areas to be so smooth. Mine usually winds up lumpy.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

If it helps, here is my process for the script. This only works on white blanks for me, since I find the label's edges to be too visible on colored blanks. A different brand of labels may help, but I've only tried one.

First, I lay down a light coat of epoxy on the unhanded blank, just enough to get a smooth, level surface. If it's a smooth blank, obviously skip this.

Next, I write out the signature on a clear label, which gives me a few opportunities to get it right. I've used a Pigma Micron pen and a Faber-Castell India ink pen, and both are archival, for the UV exposure. I like the Faber-Castell better because it's thicker.

I use nitrile gloves to handle the label and a burnishing tool to make sure there is good adhesion. I then apply a light coat of clear nail polish to protect the ink from the epoxy.

After 30-plus minutes, the epoxy goes on. I'm not sure that I have much to say about getting a smooth, level finish. Practice has certainly helped. Good epoxy does too. Pro-Kote is what I've been using lately. I have some Threadmaster Lite that is too old and doesn't work as well as it used to. A light, judicious application of heat from a heat gun helps too, but too much here can cause waves in the finish. The main thing I've learned is to trust the epoxy to self-level. Problems usually happen when I pick at it too much. If I come back after an hour, and it still doesn't look good, I can wipe it off and start over.

I’m really liking everyone’s work. I’m feeling a bit bad since I suggested this months ago. I though unpacking after a move would be faster. I had visions of finishing three rods. I’ve got a partially finished Euro nymph rod staring at me. It’s three weeks to opening day. It may be the only rod I get done this season.

Ok here’s an update on the heddon pal pro weight 8383. Full strip down, newly installed spigot ferrule. Wraps with Nocp nylon in the old Scott style (yellow on yellow). Original cork and reel seat. Kept script area and added my own mark to it. Casted the rod yesterday after the last coat of spar thinking it would make a nice 4wt. It casted the 4wt ok but really shined with a 5wt. So we’ve got a 7.5’ 5wt. Pics:

Now there's a good pragmatic rebuild, right to the wrap up the barrel of the tiptop and the double layer wraps at the spigot. Not surprising it favored a 5 weight. Wouldn't be surprising if it were even better with a 6.
