I have an embarrassingly basic question to ask. For a stripping guide such as the one shown here, which side faces the reel? Does the single short support face the reel, or is it the side with the two tall supports? I have looked at many rod photos online, and I believe I am seeing some inconsistencies in the orientation.
Thanks.
Mitch

For a fly rod the orientation doesn't matter. Pick the direction you prefer.

For a spinning rod orienting the two legs toward the reel is supposed to unsnarl tangles during the cast.

Of course a pseudo scientific, completely BS, rationale is handy if somebody on steam questions your choice.

I think they look better with the two feet facing the reel seat.

It really doesn't matter though....not a silly question at all.

or just get a symmetric stripping guide ;-)

I like to do the two legs facing seat too, that's the way I'd do a spin rod so it looks wrong the other way, to me. But as Tom says it really don't matter.

I go with the 2 legs facing to reel seat, always has just looked right to me. Particularly when you experiment with funkier stripping guides ;-)

Thomas and Thomas always puts them on backwards as they say the “feet” actually get in the way of the line sometimes but I think it’s just a matter of aesthetic preference and doesn’t make any difference, or if it does it’s so inconsequential that it’s basically undetectable.
