I was gifted this Medallion MSP70-2. Many on here find vintage glass makes a pretty nice rod, so I’m doing a conversion. I played around with someone’s formula involving measures of length, weight in grams, deflection yada yada and this rod appears to be a #5. I casted a bit in the yard with a 5 and it feels ok. Here is my starting point:

I've got it stripped and turned down the grip towards the butt making room for my 1494. For now, I left the windings on the hook keeper, ferules, and of course under the Silaflex decal and picked up some pretty close in color A thread from Fisherman's Supplies in Redondo Beach. I've got guides, tip top, and color preserver. All I need to find is some old school yellowing varnish.

I remember getting a Sila-flex just like that back in 1978. After just replacing the guides with ones that were more suitable it was a fine little fly rod. That is, until one day when I had been fishing alone and someone drove off with the rod on top of the car. Duh!

Most old spinning rods do not make good fly rods, but they will cast a fly line.

I'd bet I've done a dozen of em over the years, and they all are too tippy, and/or are 7/8wts.

Here it is. I tried using the original sliding rings but they didnt securely hold the likely reel feet. Snake guides and stripper and reel seat were in the parts bin. Decent match on the thread with an investment in some Man-O-War and Presto:

That looks good. How does it cast?

I haven’t fished it yet but it throws a WF5 just fine in the yard. It would be interesting to compare it with a Silaflex Medallion fly rod. It is so calm and deliberate.

Wow, that's a thing of beauty right there. Really nicely done.
