I've had this Phillipson Royal on hand for quite some time, its missing guides and needs some help. Any thoughts on matching the thread color on the wraps? Regarding the guides, this rod has the double wire spiral guides should I replace these with new vintage guides or find similar guides for the restoration?

The only source I know of for those guides is Ricks Rods in Denver. They might have new-old-stock thread too.

It might be possible to remove just the dark red guide wraps while leaving the decorative wraps.

Yes, I've contacted Ricks. Seems the spiral guides add some noise while casting and I may just use regular guides, haven't decided yet?

They do indeed make noise when casting, still a good look though. Your decision.

Had one rebuilt with traditional snake style guides. No regrets. New guides preform better than the factory guides.

If you wanted to preserve the look in part you could use modern snake guides in gold color.

That's a very good idea about using the gold colored guides, I think I'll try that.

I really enjoy the double wire guides on my RF70c; I find that they shoot line nicely.

They do make some noise, but I certainly don't notice it while fishing.
