Hi everyone,
Noob question here.
I wrote out the perfect butt signature with india ink to find out that it easy wiped off after letting it dry for a few days. I touched the script by accident and my fingerprint took the ink off.

I am wondering if I re-wrote the signature and let it dry, will the application of epoxy wipe the ink off again or has others had success with the ink staying put?

Thanks!
Jason

Never had that experience with India ink. You haven’t diluted it have you? I always wait a full day for drying before applying finish. Make sure the blank area is clean and dry before writing. Hope it works.

It was my experience with epoxy that it would smear India Ink. I had to use a paint pen with epoxy. I now use spar and as long as I let it dry for a day, I have not had any issues with India ink.

I’ve had the same issues with India ink pens and epoxy. Still trying to dial it in, I just sprayed a signature area with fixative and I’ll let you know how that works once I put on the finish.

Sorry, I can’t be much more of a help. This step still has me stumped.

I tape off either side of the signature area then hit it with a light coat of spray lacquer. Then immediately remove the tape so you don’t get a sharp edge. Then you can do an epoxy coat after it dries for a day. Oh yeah let the ink dry at least a day before spraying.

I have found that if you scuff the area just lightly enough to remove the gloss with 400 grit sandpaper, the india ink will adhere better. Your varnish or epoxy will gloss it back. On the last rod, the ink wouldn't come off with alcohol after 2 days of drying. I probably got the idea from an old thread here.

Here are our steps:
Inscribe using india ink
Let dry 3-5 minutes
Cover inscription with Sally Hanson's Hard as Nails (clear)
Let dry at least 30 minutes
Apply epoxy

Can you used thinned epoxy? or do you have to use full strength. I've had a lot of problems with thinned epoxy lifting up whatever is underneath it.

I don't use thinned epoxy when coating the inscription. I usually thin with acetone and I'm afraid it would remove the inscription.

It does remove the inscription, or bubble the coating over the inscription.

I've never risk it, so I'm not sure. Just knowing that acetone removes nail polish is enough to steer me away from trying.....

Mask it off and give it a spritz with Fixatif. Let it dry overnight and you're ready to go.

Very much appreciate the tip on the Sally Hansen's.

I decided to give this method a try, and here's the result. I think it turned out nicely.
