One grip and seat done. One to go. My goal is to have them both wrapped up this week.

All the parts except the cork are genuine Heddon NOS parts. I still have to turn a couple of end caps.

Finally had a change to sit down and do some wrapping this weekend. Here’s a peak at the color scheme of the wraps for my red truck

Rods are wrapped. All finishing should be done by the end of the week. Three rods in three weeks. Not a bad pace. One bamboo rod left to do.

I did find this gem of a rod tube at the resale shop for $2. Guess those new rods will now have an appropriate home.

Cheffy, That is a great rebuild/restoration. It's interesting to see the walnut without the spaceage reelseat. It really is a great way to build new life into old components.

Got some shots of the Scott g905 rod tonight all finished up. Original Scott g blank from San Francisco days. Really happy with my epoxy work this time. Thanks for looking!

Lots of great stuff happening here guys.

Merk, love the clean, classic look of your build.

Mr. Jesse, your take on the Scott G has very sleek modern vibe.

Gary, can't wait to see pics of your rods. And that Heddon tube is the coolest. Is it a multi-rod carrier?

Gotta agree with Picket. Super nice looking builds

That tube is for a single Heddon spinning rod.
I’m going to see if my som the graphic designer can make a new label so it’s for a fly rod.

I forgot I had this 8ft 5/6 weight Cortland Pro Crest sitting in the corner of the basement. I found it about 7 years ago at a thrift store in a barrel full of mostly crappy spinning rods. Even though it was in severe disrepair it stuck out to me as probably a good rod. I think I paid $2 for it. I wish now that I had taken pics of it before I stripped it down 2 weeks ago. Many guides missing, missing chunks of cork, etc. Also had about an 1/8” split in the female ferrule and about 3/8” to 1/2” split in the male ferrule which I trimmed off. Well, other than the splits the blank appears to be in good shape and well made. Because of the splitting issue and the trimming I did, the ferrules now only engage maybe a half inch, although sounds like they engaged maybe only an inch before, by design. I’m trying to decide if it’ll be worth the effort to somehow make a better ferrule and build it up with new parts. Seems like many here think these rods in good original shape fish very nicely and that makes me tempted. The baby poo yellow brown presents its challenges too. LOL.

I have redone 7' and 7.5' pro crest rods. Both were metal ferruled. Nice blanks and they make nice rods.

Is yours a tip over butt glass to glass ferrule? If it is i'd be skeptical about the ferrule fit seeing how both male and female ends were trimmed. And IMO .5" is not enough. Others with more rod making expertise will i hope share their thoughts.

Your best bet might be to build an oversleeve ferrule/hood like the old Fenwicks, or fit it with a set of metal ferrules.

Thanks for the ideas. I came up with something I’m going to try...I think it might work. Turned it on my trusty lathe. :lol Going to epoxy it in. I think photos might describe it better than I can.

I haven’t glued in the ferrule extension yet, just dry fitting some components though to get a feel for a possible look. Leaning towards color locked orange and black jasper for wraps. Going to attempt finishing the blank with Permagloss before parts go on.

Is that a plug for a spigot ferrule? You're off to a great start.

Hi picketpin,
Not a spigot ferrule. I made an extension, if you will, of the taper of the rod, to gain back what I trimmed from the split, plus another 1 inch to 1.25 inch or so. So it still remains a tip over butt ferrule, the plug I made just extends it. Hope that makes sense.

Just recently did a refinish on my 8 1/2' Wallace Flycaster that I picked up in 2019. Pics of the rod before refinish are here, viewtopic.php?f=3&t=66879

Stripped all the old finish on the blank and wiped on 8 coats of Tru-oil. Replaced all guides and tip top with Snake Brand guides. Guides are wrapped with 3/0 silk, color is rust #179 from Anglers Workshop tipped with black silk, spar varnish on wraps with no color preserver. Kept the original reelseat and grip. Who originally made this rod is still a mystery. It is in my hands a very smooth, great casting 5 or 6 wt and a great find for $20. Bruce

With the sun behind it, that blank looks very much like a Lamiglas S-glass blank from the late 70s. The best translucent rods/blanks were from Fenwick, Lamiglas, and the Cortland (FR2000s). There were some little known translucent rods from other builders, such as South Bend. I stole the photo below from an earlier forum post by brockton. His photo shows a backlit Lami S-glass with the factory label.

You did a great job with your restoration. Your rebuild looks much nicer than the original rod.

Tom
