So it’s that time of year again
Does anyone want to do the the Winter build challenge again?
I’ll start it off I’m redoing a pair of
Heddon Mark IV’s

[Note added: Here is a link to last year's Winter Rebuild thread. Tom]

Guy's how does this winter challenge work? I have seen a thing with flies that get sent to one individual and then all the flies get disbursed. Do you do that with a rod?

Not really that. In the past there was a soft deadline that everyone tried to get done by. It’s more of a chance to rebuild an old rod and everyone has fun with it. Shares ideas, maybe swaps arts and keep each other motivated during the Winter. Lots of photos get posted. Comments abound. Fun times. And if you don’t have an old rod just ask. Someone usually has something kicking around.

I tried last year and failed. Maybe I’ll be more motivated this year!

I could likely get into this! I don’t have anything to rebuild however I just started a red truck 4wt. I have only glued up the grip and reel seat. Is there a start date and and end date?

I also could possibly be convinced to built a 7wt with this....

No hard and fast start or end date.
I think the first round everyone tried for a March 1 end but I know I blew that due to things. For me as long as it’s done before opening day is good.
Make that red truck your project.

I also have a new Haldin 57 to build. Does that count? I don’t have any project rods lying around right now.

I think this will be fun!! I’ll post some pictures of what I have done so far. Blank is a red truck 4wt. Reel seat is made out of skateboard decks by Jory Ward (look him up on Instagram. AMAZING rod work). Plan to use Ti-chrome single foot snake guides and a wire framed stripper guide. Thread color will likely be a dark red with black accents.

I have too many new blanks and not enough time this winter. But I am really excited to see what people come up with.

We’re moving and I have four rods to finish for myself and friends. This is a good inspiration to get them done by the end of Feb.

a beat up ff75 -- awaiting delivery, looking forward to getting and rebuilding this one. Right now I am working on a 6' steffen for a friend. Cheers all.

So is the plan to update the thread with photos as we go? Or just a start and finished product

Look at last years challenge that’s pinned to the first post.
Some do before and after. Some do progress reports. Some post and ask for advice. It a chance for everyone to show off, focus, and have some fun and a new rod for opening day.

I’m in. Will likely start with trying to finish the System 10 I started last year!

Are we updating this thread or starting new ones?

I don't want that kind of pressure for my first build....haha! I have an 8wt Iconoglass blank and a 5wt LMX (also NFC) that I'm planning on building. The trick is that they are at a friends place who has all of the building materials (and skills), so I have to work that safely into the schedule.

Just finished my most recent build. It’s my 7th rod. A fisher NOS blank bought from old school. 7’ 4/5 weight. Wrapped with gudebrod brown and red silk. Blued nickel hardware including the ferrule rings. Reel seat is from ray lee, absolutely gorgeous. It’s dyed maple. Check out the pics below!

That is pretty build. Nice job. And it will fish with the best in its class. I wish i still had my fisher 7'er.

Nice work on the build. I have a Ray Lee reel seat on one of my rods, and it won't be the last. Tell us more about it once you get it on the water.

My ff75 arrived. Spent a couple hours tearing it down. Blank is in very good condition - it's straight and sound. The problem is the female ferrule. Will attempt to trim it and see how the tip over butt fits. If not, then maybe make a spigot ferrule? This will be a fun project.
