Looking good goldenrod.

My fenwick ff75 shown here with another winter project - a Batson E glass SPG780 extended to make a 7' "tadpole," these blanks are well made, inexpensive. A good choice for beginners if you dont mind ferruling them (easy once youve done it).

I have wrapped and applied two coats of varnish to the ff75. Needs a couple more coats and then i'll glue up the reel seat.

A few "before" pics of ff75. Crumbling cork, corroding metal reel seat and crushed ferrule that looked as if it got caught in a car door. I only saw the "what if" potential in it. Ff75 has always been my favorite fenwick.

Thanks. Hoping to get the grip and reelseat on by tomorrow...will post pics. Then need to decide on wrap colors/tipping.

Got to spend time on the south bend. I have glued-up the grip blank to assemble from the rear. I will be turning the grip on the blank to make sure everything is concentric. The seat fit is different as in the original build, the blank only came half-way the depth of the seat.
The last picture shows my final mock-up with a new fighting butt making the rod better than original.

John, et al: happy President's Day from upstate NY. Sleet, freezing rain, ice storms today, tonight, and into tomorrow. A good day to stay inside at the bench. Your project is coming along nicely John. The last pic is blurry but i see your grip and fighting butt fit up. What color thread will you use?

The winter Fenwick 2021 is wrapped in Gudebrod garnet size A nylon thread. This might be my favorite shade of thread ever. It's not the color of the Fenwick factory rod, but IMO it's a beautiful traditional old school look.

I double wrapped the female ferrule and snake guide. Because i had to trim the female ferrule this guide is placed .5" up from original guide placement. Added a brass ferrule ring too.

Moved the stripping guide down a bit, to a more comfortable reach position. Did static guide placement test and trial casting, and I found no effect of trimming the ferrule or moving the snake guide.

Thinking that the rebuilt ferrule will be fine with 2x wrap and brass ferrule support ring but the true test will come on the water.

The rod is getting a coat of spar varnish today.

The reel seat? I seem to change my mind every day. I have yet to decide but today i am leaning toward a two-tone Varmac with a "distressed" finish. Let's see what happens tomorrow!?

Pat, OK on that. I like what you did, the ferrule ring should hold everything together well, and a double wrap too! I like that garnet wrap, and on this rod, I was thinking of using pro-wrap burgundy or merlot (as I have used all my Gudebrod garnet up), but I am not sure. The rod was re-wrapped with a gold thread that I did not like. We'll see. You can't go wrong with a varmac reel seat, though.

The weather is threatening here, but no ice or snow yet, our turn is supposed to come later today and into tonight. Stay warm, dry, and keep the lights on!

John

This whole website has been a great inspiration to me. Thanks everyone!

Here is the Cortland Pro-Crest with the grip and reelseat mounted. The image of the tip and butt next to each other shows about how much they engage when together. Vera insert, D20 seat, grip, and cork check all from Struble. Ferrule trim ring and black fiberglass stent material (the black ferrule extension I fabricated) from Proof. Going with chrome Snake Brand tiptop and guides with a 9mm NOS Perfection stripping guide. I’m going to see if I can make these 3 threads work together (subject to change). Hope this all works.

This forum is a great place to learn, and not just about fiberglass fly rods. The community of flyfishers, collectors, pro and hobby builders is just fantastic. I have learned much from many folks here.

Goldenrod your pro crest is looking real nice. I like your components and am interested to see how your thread choices come together. I have always liked the cortland pro crest series.

Cortland Pro Crest rebuild:

Think I’m going to go with just the black orange jasper and some black tipping. The other two colors weren’t doing it for me.

Goldenrod, I've done that combo on a couple of rods. You will like it!

Picketpin, when you get the time, I would love to hear about your method to ferrule out a blank. I'm thinking that is the next thing for me to try.

Well...ok. here goes. This should open up a real can of worm, but what the heck.

Here's how i do it. Low tech, but works.

Assume you have a 7' blank and want to center ferrule it with a spigot plug.

I use solid fiberglass for plug material. Overall plug length will be +/- 3" with approx 3/8" exposed gap when sections are joined.

So for a 7' center ferruled rod you want to cut 42.75" down from the tip. Now you have a 42.75" tip section and a 41.25" butt section. This, plus 1.5" of exposed plug (male spigot) will give you a butt section equal in length to the tip section.

To fit the ferrule plug take length of solid fiberglass ferrule stock and insert into the bottom of the tip section until it fits snug without jamming it in. Check for any wobble or slopiness in the fit. Scrape or sand the plug a bit at a time, rotating it as you go, and keep checking the fit. I try for total plug length of about 3.5" - approx 1.5" exposed male spigot + a 3/8" gap + 1.5" buried in the butt section. I use two part epoxy to glue the plug into the butt section. Take care to properly fit the male and female connection to achieve a good morse, friction fit. Any slop will weaken the ferrule; a recipe for failure.

Hope this helps.

Nice description picketpin. I've done the same. One hint I would add is that if as you get the ferrule plug close you can draw a pencil line straight down it. Then spin it while checking the fit. The areas that the pencil is rubbed are the high points, and the low points will still have the mark. This will help you know where to sand.

Thanks so much Picketpin, I really appreciate that. Where do you get your solid ferrule material?

Picketpin52 - nice work on the restoration.

Goldenrod67 - I can't wait to see the final product. I hope you share some pics when it is finished.

Coldpass, thanks. That is good advice regarding a pencil mark to check the male plug fit.

There is a lot of info on the Web re ferrule making, but i learned from Dale Clemens' book "Fiberglass Rod Making," and from Mel Marshall's book "Build Your Own Fishing Rod."

My self imposed deadline to finish builds was March 1.
For once I met a deadline.
Three glass Heddon from NOS blanks. 2,3,and 4 pc.
Graphite TFO 2 wt for backpacking and a lightweight carry tube to carry it in.
