Wow, there are some nice rods being built already!

Pat that Fenwick looks like it is going to be a fun challenge. Instead of cutting it, have you considered encapsulating that female ferrule section in a sleeve of some kind?

I am still debating which rods to refurbish for this winterfest.

What about giving the male portion a super thin coat of epoxy. You could then wet sand it down to fit

Cheffy - will that hold up to heavy use?

I had aleady trimmed 1/2" section of the split female ferrule. The male fits in to a depth of
1&1/2" -- and the net is that the rod with sections joined is just shy of the original length of 7.5 ft. This is because the reel seat was mounted 1/2" off the end of the butt.

John, as you point out, i am considering an oversleeve as well. First picture shows the 1/2"
damaged section cut from the blank and a couple potential oversleeves.

With 1& 1/2" in the female do you think an oversleeve necessary?

Because so many of us FFFers love the ff75 so much, in homage to this venerable classic I want to
keep the original # of guides and guide spacing.

Appreciate any thoughts and comments.

One inch and one half inches should be good, especially if you have a ferrule wrap and guide foot wrap somewhere in there too. I don't think you would need an oversleeve then, unless the crack continues to propagate.

I like the idea of retaining the original guide spacing, even if you have to fudge a little on the guide near to the ferrule.

That rod is going to be nice!

I love the transluscent glass of the early 60s Fenwicks.

Trimmed the damaged end of the female ferrule of this FF75, requalified the ferrule fit and added a brass ferrule support ring.

Looking for a reel seat with the right mojo. If you have one that you think has that mojo, and are willing to sell, send me a PM please.

Playing with thread. From top to bottom in the photo: Gudebrod brown #396, Fishawk brown #541, Gudebrod garnet # 206.

All of your thread options are good, but I like the garnet best as well.

If I can hobble down to the shop later I’ll look to see what kind of seats I have left.

Well... I made some progress on the rod... I wrapped some guides but overall not too happy with how the turned out. Will likely have to take off and prep the guides a bit more.

Love this idea. I refurbished most of my glass rods in need of refurbishing earlier in the year, so next up is an inshore graphite spinning rod with 20 years of hard use. It misses the brief, so I'll spare you the details, but it's cathartic to peel off all that is flaking, rusting, chipped and frayed in preparation to build again.

Wow! Looks terrific. What a differnce with a new grip. Did you do a complete rebuild or grip only?

Thanks, I’m doing a full rebuild on the spinning rod, and as none of the cork had gone soft and I didn’t feel like investing too much money in the grip that is just a good cleaning, some elmers golden oak wood filler, and sanding. I’ll need some Cork Seal on it to help hold the filler and keep it from degrading again quickly, but my go to shop is out of it. I’ve got an order being shipped though. I also flaked off all of the old finish with my thumbnail and will try a coat of Perma Gloss (also on order). New guides will be added, though the same spacing as the blank shows where they were.

I scored a couple really neat reel seats. Thanks Cheffy for digging these up.

Time to get working on my grip. Got the cork rings glued up for a 6.5" Fenwick style.

Today is grip day. I turned the grips for two projects on the bench.

First a Fenwick style grip for a FF75. Also turned a cigar grip for a 7' on an extended spg780 blank.

It took some digging, but I have 3 candidates for this year's refinishing build off. First is an 8.5 South Bend Custom 3150 "Power Taper."
I previously stripped this rod to practice drip varnishing, and even though it came out a little thick, it is smooth, glossy, and protective. I originally wanted to save the grip because it has a factory thumb groove, but the seat is only 6" long, and it felt too short for the rod.

It is called a power taper which means it has a large diameter butt to provide greater power for false casting dries and streamers.

It has a chrome plated brass ferule that fits, but does not pop. I am going to save the ferrule, if I can.

The two additional rods are old, fished-to-death Montague Hologlass models that need to be stripped, and clear coated. They are tobacco glass, and could be Conolon blanks, or later blanks that Montague built in-house. We will see.

I may have some NOS ferrules for your South Bend if you want to replace them. Depending on size.

Some good stuff happening here. Love the Starry Night reel seat.
I'm also looking forward to seeing what happens with the SPG780. I've got a spare blank of that here next to me. Still working on a few other projects though. Your Fenwick grip looks perfectly to specifications.

Thanks for the pictures all! Keep them coming. :)

Wow! Mr. Jesse, how did i miss this? What cool looking reel seat insert. And I love the hardware. Are both insert and hardware made by R Lee?

yes sir, both by ray lee. he had a few similar reel seats to that starry night one - he did a bunch in that style in one batch, I think. When I ordered the reel seat the insert was longer, showing more of the starry night scene. when I picked the downlocking reel seat it took away some of the reel seat, which obviously makes sense but I was sad to see when I got it. It was my fault for picking that style of hardware. the problem is, i just couldn't see a double or single slide band setup on this rod - its an original G905 from Scott. Just too big of a rod for sliding bands, to me.

the cool thing about ray is he has the finished inserts ready that he can send you pictures of. then when you pick something you like, you pick your hardware too, he makes it all work together. he ships the reel seats in plastic cases with foam packing in the plastic - real class act. He has a facebook page where he posts a bunch of his stuff that is available, you can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/RLreelseats

Fenwick winter build porn! A couple gratuitous shots of FF75 blank after application of protective clearcoat.
