@2wtt bands for braces come in various sizes work well also except at the very tip of the blank.

I don't really think that there will be much noticable performance difference on a short trout rod. There is some truth to the line clearance with really small guides if using loop to loop connections and long leaders, light tippets, and big fish. If you fish this way better to use nail knots regardless of guide size.

We put so much time into making the rod look nice. Make it look right. I think it looks silly using 1/0 all the way down the rod shaft. I use 1/0 two-foot snakes on the tip section then increase the sizes to look nice to a #10 stripper.
