Packing thread

Here's what I've been using to pack thread for years. I use it to pack as I go by holding it in my right hand and as I spin the rod I use it to push the new thread against the thread that has been already laid down. It's made from a standard exacto blade that I ground the edge and point off of then rounded and polished. I polish with a buffing wheel and tripoli or Zam polishing compound but you could accomplish the same by using a file and progressively finer grades of sandpaper. I learned this from a bamboo rod builder in Vermont.

I like it! I just use the prong on the cap from a ball point pen.

I also use the tab of a pen cap, but for burnishing. For packing, I haven't found my thumb nail lacking so far.

an old credit card edge is the best, i have found.
4 edges let u pick a side for each size thread

d size: can be pushed with about any flat edge. edges can even be sharpened or not

been doing this for 40-45 yrs or so. saw American Indian Ladies working in all the rods companies
i ever visited.

I use this burnishing tool made by Xacto. Ive had this since college (late 80s-early 90s). Looked at the X-Acto website, and it looks like they no longer offer this tool for sale.

Was taught to get the wood cuticle pushers from Sally Beauty Supply. They work well enough.
