I am in the process of setting up my own rolling facility and should be rolling blanks as soon as next month. Blank sales and production will have increased focus and capabilities so I wanted to take this opportunity to create a discussion about some wants/needs for fellow rod builders. I will continue to produce uni-s blanks from my Western Glass (8'6" and above) and ********* Glass (8' and below) series at a reasonable price. I will be introducing kits for these as well (a handful of you have taken advantage of this over the last year or 2).

I will be introducing a series of blanks made out of eglass (most likely raw/white) that will be priced below $200. These will only be sold as blanks to both hobbyists and pros. ********* Rod will not be offering finished rods in these. I think they will be available roughly in 7' 3wts up to 8' 5wts. Perhaps a 6 if there's enough interest.

I will have a series of truly moderate 4pc graphite available as well. These feel very similar the older Winstons, Scott G's, etc.... They have been a focus of my fishing this year and find them as pleasant as glass.

Please feel free to make suggestions for what you would like to see available down the line. This is going to be lots of fun.

Thanks!

Dusty

What you have planned sounds great!

Are the e-glass blanks going to be different tapers than the ********* Glass s-blanks? How will they compare?

They will be different tapers but still progressive in nature.

I know it's niche, but switch rods. without the echo series and anglers roost there are even fewer options out there, none on the more affordable end. I think something like a 10'6" 7wt in a faster taper s-glass would be well received.

I was thinking about "pack rods" :) 5 pieces? Or at least 4 piece options in the 8' or under rod lengths.

-side note: Anglers roost said not taking orders at this time... anyone know if this is temporary?

Awesome! Really excited to see this venture get underway for you.

+1 on the pack rod idea. I would certainly be curious about a production run of one of your more popular rods in a 5- or 6-piece format. Perhaps the 8'6" 5-weight?

Congrats on the progress. Great to see someone getting into rolling blanks on a smaller scale.

Can I ask what you are doing for ferrules? Personally I think it would be awesome to be able to get a once piece blank that could be self-ferruled or at least cut to the builder's specifications. However, I also completely understand that it could possibly be the cause of a lot of headaches on the production side of things, it's a lot simpler to make tip-over-butt ferrules.

I'm probably in the minority here, but shorter heavier rods geared towards bass fishing would be cool. 6, 7, 8 weights in 7'-8' lengths. Might not be your target market though.

5pc rods are definitely on the agenda, Switch/Spey are future possibilities but I've never spey fished so going to hold off on those for a while. 1pc blanks most likely won't be available however there will be some ability for enterprising pro custom builders to cut and ferrule their own blanks utilizing spigots. Most of my designs available to the public will be tip over. I'm open to shorter heavier rods as well.

Exciting. What's your thinking/experience on the raw/white blanks? Do customers/builders want to or typically "paint"/color them, or want to, and do they lend themselves to that?

My experience is that half like them, half don't. I happen to like them, although I like brown and/or black just as much. I am looking into black prepreg woven eglass as well and it's my hope to offer people the choice as long as the price of the material is somewhat close.

My Uni-S Western and ********* Glass will be available as blanks or rods in white, black, and brown.

I see this as a great opportunity for Dusty to expand his business and keep everything under one roof, no need to subcontract his blanks out anymore.
Having another blank manufacturer for hobby builders and builders like myself having more choices in blanks to build on.

Dusty will do well this new endeavor, I for one cannot wait to for him to get rolling!

Dusty, wow that’s great news I am so excited you will be rolling your own blanks. That’s fantastic news. The graphite series sounds like a must try.

Great news for us! How about a 8’3” - 8’6” parabolic rod in 6/7 or 7/8 weights in 3 or 4 pieces?

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I already have some nice patterns in longer 6 and 7wts although they’re not para. Think they would be fun, maybe some limited runs down the road.

Wonderful news my friend !

Absolutely love my 8’9 5wt !

I would love to see a 5 or 6 foot small stream rod.

Just what I need, more choices for blanks to build. You mean, I need not only another 805, but also an e-glass something for small streams? All on top of my most excellent 866?

Seriously, this all sounds great, Dusty -- looking forward to the new lineup.

I would like to see a long, lighter line weight rod that could be used for nymphing. Something with a strong butt and soft tip. I don’t know how feasible that is with glass, but I wouldn’t mind a heavier rod that can be offset with a larger reel. Roy

The 863 is long, very light and has a soft tip. I love mine

Dusty, much of it sounds really good, are the standard rods going to be 3, or 4 piece, or both? On backpacking rods, I like those that break down into even numbered pieces.

I especially like the idea of some master blanks in 1 piece, or smaller mix-and-match master sections that can be cut and spigot ferruled, or sleeved by a custom builder. Otherwise, tip over ferrules are good and I like the idea of clear, black, or brown blank colors.

I like the idea of the e-glass offerings, and suggest you add them in the shorter lengths like small stream rods from 5 to 7 feet.

Thanks!

Excited for these, and agree with much of what's been said. Especially pack rods, in weights between 5 and 8. There are some pack rod blanks on the market, but they seem to top out around 4 weights. People like to hike (and canoe!) for bigger fish too! Would love a 8-8.5' 7 or 8 weight rod in 5 or 6 pieces (even made a post about looking for something like this a little while ago!). I don't know if physical weight becomes an issue with this type of rod, but I trust you to figure that out...
