Andy, can you see the balsa core if you shine a very bright light thru the rod blank?

I don't have any Wonderods of the right vintage.

Hello
Good advice Tom

I'm working on it the spot light was frozen in my Van.
Gotta charge the battery then we can candle the blank.

Something weird going on posted some pictures and they disappeared get the feeling Photobucket is acting up again.

What are you recommending as the photo host these days ?

photobucket is doing something that's temporarily downgrading their bandwidth - my photos from there are showing up intermittently - sometimes posting, sometimes timing out - likely a software upgrade (more likely a new hurdle for free users to focus them into a subscription purchase).

Andy, Imgur is the way to go - it's loaded with social media and memes, but once you find the way to your images, it works really well - it's free, and it's probably those memes and social media posts that pay their expenses from ad income.
Our bandwidth is small compared to them.

ps - later today, photobucket is completely shut down and sending back photo-doesn't-exist icon for every link.

"have been fishing an old Phillipson Chieftain tc76...So who makes the closest blank today?"

It seems odd that the initial question of the OP has yet to be answered.

Actually, I answered in reply #17:

I can't think of any modern glass with that late model Phillipson feel. So buy a Phillipson!
There are no modern rods that feel like the early model Phillipson rods either. Again, there are many of these vintage rods on the market, usually sold cheap. As long as a vintage Phillipson rod does not have structural flaws, the rod can be rebuilt for little money.

What does a Modern Fiberglass Rod have that a Classic Fiberglass Rod doesn't ? Sales Hype Targeting A New Generation Of Fly Fisherman and Little Else in my humble opinion.

Thanks guys got myself all set, just working out the bugs of getting acquainted with the new photo sharing site.
The picture quality looks much better and it isn't my photo's they just look better ???

Got so caught up in the photo sharing yesterday never set foot out of the house.
It was a good day to hibernate as everything was covered in Ice.

As in just about everything Rod Making I did manage to determine that the Wonderod blank in question is in fact Hollow.I STAND CORRECTED

After spying down the I.D. of the female ferrule,it appeared the blank was hollow.
I took a narrow section of rod tip material and was able to insert the tip end threw the ferrule and into the blanks butt section about 14".

So Watson the butt end of the Spinning Rod is reinforced with a wooden dowel of sorts.

The rest will be sorted out when my Kiddos join me to spruce the rod up.

Can you tell me what to look for to identify the balsa core Wonderods. To me, your green spinning rod looks opaque, and for the life of me, I would never have pegged it as having a balsa core. On the other hand, I have a couple of Wonderods I think are that shade of green, but had never suspected they might be balsa core

I have had a couple in my hands both 7'9 flyrods in the light green color. Both had micro cracks on otherwise beautiful finishes.I have a friend who has owned 100s of wonderods and explained what happened. The balsa wicks up moisture at some point and if left in a garage or other unheated area they do expand and can crack,.They looked great but i could not in good conscience sell them on ebay even tho most would have ever noticed. My friend took them in trade and gave me more in value than i payed. He said they should still be ok to fish but also could break in the heat. This might be where" wonderods saw themselves apart " comments came from.

Hello
The Wonderod in question has a missing butt cap so we can see the wooden core … Andy M

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, but you guys will just have to resign yourselves to playing second fiddle to my grandyoung'uns …

and Andy, I have one balsa–lined fly rod translucent enough to actually see the balsa inside, so while I am curious about a couple, I'm not yet to the point of breaking off butt caps just to see

Hope you guys had a Merry, and here's wishing you a Happy here on New Year's Eve eve

:) Of course, grand kids take first priority!

Consider a good forum to be a really slow speed discussion. It hopefully gives people more time to think about what they are saying.

Have you tried shining a really bright light through your Wonderods to see if there is anything to see?

after receiving the one ( not at all what I would call 'green' ) with the balsa visible thru the fiberglass, hadn't considered there might be others that weren't so obvious … guess it's time I set up another light box and start 'reading' my rods again

Thanks Much for the explanations and mental pictures
