Recently I acquired a used Orvis rod in need of a good cleaning. A suggestion from a fellow forum member promoted me to try a magic eraser on the cork. I was really amazed at how well it cleaned it and how easy it was to do. Absolutely no harm done and it looks like new. Here's before and after pics.

I've had very good results with the magic eraser also.

I hope you fished before cleaning and kept good records. Need a scientific approach to that whole question of soiled cork mojo.

Scientific mojo?
Maybe along the same lines as your favorite fly catches the most fish.

Regardless of mojo, that is pretty impressive.

Yep, we need reliable data on that too.

I agree with jhuskey. The clean grip now looks like it needs some filler and a sanding to make it look good again. Even so, that last cork has a stain that you are not going to get clean (I know, I've done this before). I prefer the weathered look to the almost clean look. If it doesn't come off with mild soap and a microfiber cloth, I am very tempted to let it stay.

However, the cleaner grip is probably nicer to fish, and will develop it's own patina soon enough.

I just tried the magic eraser with warm water. Really worked great. I was shocked how easily it cleaned up. Thanks for the tip.

I have used the Miracle Cloth and had very good results in cleaning grips. Have also found it very handy for cleaning metal ferrules.

Woah I have to try this on my well used rods. My wife uses those magic erasers for everything so I have plenty laying around!

The magic eraser and warm water works wonders for cork, just resist the urge to scrub too much. You do not want to erode the cork at all. Very gentle rubbing is normally enough, you can use a drop of mild dish detergent if the grip is really soiled.

Clean, rinse, dry and you have a new looking grip in just a few minutes. Really easy!

Powdered dish detergent, lightly rubbed in by hand under lukewarm water, air dry.

I have used the magic eraser on a couple of rods, but I am on the fence about using it going forward - as the cork grip seemed to develop a bit of ridging that I could feel afterwards. These were on vintage rods I picked up on eBay. I think that the microfiber cloth to gently clean it up with water with a drop or two of dishwashing detergent may yield better results without the ridging effect. Anyone else have this happen after the magic eraser cleaning?

I have not had any problems with ridging although I've have heard about it before. I just rub very gently and haven't had any issues. The microfiber towel is also a good idea and should perform as well.

Murphy’s Oil Soap, warm water, soft cotton cloth, rinse often and massage gently until it looks like it came from the factory.

I have used Camp Suds castile soap or Dr Bronner's castile baby soap to clean cork grips for years. Once dry, I wipe the rod down with Johnson's paste wax, dry and buff.
