Since
This topic has reared its head again I’ll toss this out there.
I’ve probably used every CP imaginable out there. Yes I’ve had spotty results in the past. But I think I’ve got it down.
If I’m using a water based CP or Polycrylic I make sure I flood the guide foot tunnels. I literally stand the rod up and drop CP in there and let it sit until I see it wick thru. Then suck up any excess with a paper towel. Then go back and too coat them with cp. I normally will do at least three coats of CP.
I do the same with lacquer cp. For lacquer I use Testors model master clear gloss.

As Cheffy says, it's all about the tunnels. Fill them with the rod held vertically with a fine point spotter brush.

I use CP on some rods, not all. I don’t have any trouble when I follow the following regimen: Use three coats. The first two coats thinned 50% with water, the last coat full strength. Wait at least 24 hours after the last coat before applying finish.
