I did a partial rewrap of a Fisher rod and decided to have some fun with it. I laid down a course of antique gold thread and doused it with CP. Then, at the cork check, the ferrules, and the tip top, I overwound black thread in open spirals.

Spirals are not functional -- they're fun! They can be plain or fancy, and they are endless in variation, pattern, and color combinations. I think those old-time vintage rods with spirals are awesome. Here's my humble rendition. I hope you like it. And if you do, then post a picture of your favorite vintage or modern spiral-wrapped rod.

I tried using another thread as a spacer and then pulling that thread. The spirals were even but way too close together. Two thread spacer got to be frustrating. I think if I had some size D thread for a spacer it would have been better. All burnishing has to be done either before the spirals or very carefully after. Spirals, mylar and metal ferrules belong together.

Carl, I dig the vented grip & SPIRALS on your little Mac! K, those SPIRALS look great on your Browning. John, Andy, I hear you about even spaced SPIRALS... sometimes I get it right; sometimes not, as you can see... A few more to whet your whistle...

Guys, I love those SPIRALS! Chef, nice build on that blank.
Carl, cool looking rod pic. What is it?

So many rods with spirals, but so few pictures? Why don't more modern glass rods have spirals? Has the flair of a spiral wrap gone south?

Out of the closet since I began, just old school spirals remind me when things were black and white, and good ol fashioned memories.
Cheers

Sweet. Way to go Mtnbrook.

Still, it is over for spirals. Spirals are finished; spirals are through. Spirals have had their day. A long dark shadow lies upon the spiral wrap. The sun has set for the spiral wrap. Right now, it is all about the clear wrap. Clarity is good. Spirals are confounding. But one day the sunrise will bring a new idea again, spiral wraps.

The True Temper factory use of spiral wraps was tasteful and purposeful.

The most hideous innovation in spiralarity ever conceived. One of life's great mysteries is why or how anyone would ever imagine such a thing.

Image

I feel that clear and spiral are harmonious elements not to be confined to distinct periods. I like them where they will provide a little more grip at the ferrule or hold finish over a decal or writing.

Sometimes on a refinish job, spirals let you cover/conceal or transition blemishes or fades in the old blank.

You can even spiral an old junk section of blank used as a reel seat insert.

Wrap up one foot, continue with a spiral beneath the guide itself, on to the next foot and down it to complete the wrap. I can't tell if I like the look, but on casual rebuilds for rods I won't use much, it is fun to go spiral on a whim.

that was a silaflex (2 series silaflex. 7.5 footer). It came up on the auction site listed as "cortland or browning .... made from blanks" but it appears to be a factory rod in like new condition. Sometimes you get lucky. A really nice casting rod.

Just finishing up the Lami SFL 9', daughter & I are off to the Deschutes on the 14th and I would like to christen it. I have not yet looked at flows but when we went in May when sammy was full on the river was brown & also full on... The rod weighs 4.2oz with the seat alone weighing 0.7oz. I need to finish up protecting the Lami script, so far only the thread has two thinned coats of varnish, the script is correct in that the flex is Medium, should be an excellent large river rod if its not to old & brittle :)
